Meet Jaatje and Willem

Jaatje and her husband, Willem and their co-host Hanneke are easy-going hosts that love sharing stories from their culture as well as South African staples from their kitchen. Jaatje (pronounced Yaatya) grew up on a farm in the Kalahari desert and moved to the Winelands where she has lived for several years now. Jaatje is a color consultant by day who changes spaces such as offices and homes with color to improve people's well-being. At night and on weekends she and her husband love hosting guests in their Stellenbosch home and often cook with their co-host, Hanneke. Hanneke is an assistant winemaker at a local winery and has a unique perspective on pairing food and wine. Jaatje and her husband Willem love cooking and are on a quest to make cultured butter at home. Jaatje particularly enjoys the colors and textures that create delicious meals. Their residence is a very open cottage-style home situated near a farm at the base of a mountain range.

What to expect

In-home meal: (4-10 guests) You will be greeted by Jaatje, Willem and Hanneke as you enter their cozy and comfortable cottage home. You will then enjoy a braai, South Africa's national obsession with barbecuing on an open wood-fire. Dishes you might try include authentic springbok meat from Jaatje's family farm in the Kalahari, lamb chops, boerewors (sausage), steak and seasonal grilled vegetables, such as charred, baked and seeded eggplant mixed with cumin and yoghurt. In addition, Jaatje loves serving raw vegetable salads with a blend of herbs and spices such as a carrot or beet salad dressed with her friend's homemade botanical vinegar that is made on the farm. These dishes can be paired with wine if you choose the optional alcohol add-on.
If you'd like to try other traditional home-cooked South African dishes instead such as bobotjie (curry spiced meatloaf) or pap and wors (corn porridge and sausage) let Jaatje know ahead of time.

Cooking experience: (2-8 guests) Learn to cook Jaatje's creative salads as well as how to barbecue meats and breads on the fire. You can expect to learn to make 2-3 of the dishes you will be eating. The cooking class portion of the experience will last between 1-2 hours before you share the meal you helped prepare over conversation with Jaatje, Willem and Hanneke.

Market visit: (1-5 guests) Please choose between a vinegar or wine tour instead of a market tour when creating your booking.

Jaatje and Willem offer a Rozendal Botanical Vinegar tour instead of a market tour. The farm that they live on makes incredible organic botanical vinegars and a vinegar tasting there is an experience not to be missed. A tasting tour takes about 30min. The tour starts at the cottage and everyone will walk about 30m down a little hill to the vinegar bar for the tasting.

Jaatje and Hanneke offer a wine tour. Meet Hanneke at the De Morgenzon winery in Stellenbosch and go on a 1.5 hour walking tour with her to understand the history and culture of the winery and South African wine. You will get to taste 2-3 wines produced by the winery before returning home for your cooking demo and meal.

Notes: There are two large but very friendly dogs on the farm property that roam outdoors. If you prefer that the dogs stay outdoors, let Jaatje know so the dogs can be kept out of the house. Hanneke is a great friend of the couple and she will cook along when guests desire a wine-pairing food experience.

Traveler reviews

South African food is a truly unique culinary experience, from the flavors and colors to the preparation and history. Being able to learn new and different flavors that truly are staples to this country was great fun. Jaatje, Hanneke and Willem are young and knowledgeable hosts, who share this great experience with enthusiasm and love for food, wine, and their culture. - Kimberly and Daniel, Traveling Spoon Ambassadors

Jaatje and Willem are ideal hosts. They opened up their lovely homes and provided a warm atmosphere for a delicious meal. We even got to experience a vinegar tasting on their farm, which I highly recommend. From braai brekies out back to local wine, fresh vegetables and homemade pear birthday cake, our experience was more than a 10/10. Jaatje and Willem will be friends forever! - Kaitlin June 22, 2017
