Meet JJ

JJ is a passionate believer in the importance of shared meals as it brings people together. After experiencing the joys of cooking firsthand from her grandmother, she is inspired to bring that same joy and passion in her menu - using nature’s best spices, ingredients and flavorings. Influenced by the teachings of Buddhism, she believes that each ingredient should be respected for its history, character, and purpose when used in a dish. JJ firmly believes that our bodies heal from within, not from external factors, and that we are given the gift of self-healing at birth - eventually we are what we consume!

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

In-home meal: (1-6 guests) JJ calls this the E.A.T experience, where you will eat fresh, satisfying and lesser-known homestyle meals at a locals home. You will be encouraged to ask your host any question with regards to the food, ingredients, culture etc. JJ loves to share the stories behind all her creations! And lastly, you will get the opportunity to taste and savor several dishes inspired by rich Asian cultures and heritage. During this special dining experience you will enjoy an authentic vegan/vegetarian Omakase (a Japanese tradition of letting a chef choose your order) menu, created using seasonal local ingredients. JJ is excited to spread the joy of shared meals with you, which she truly believes brings people together!

Cooking experience: (1-2 guests) Join JJ in her compact yet efficient kitchen and learn to prepare 2-3 vegetarian/vegan Asian dishes. During your hands-on lesson you will help chop ingredients and stir-fry them to perfection as she shares her secrets to create simple, flavorful dishes.

Market visit: (1-3 guests) Meet at JJ's home and then ride together to the neighborhood market, Marsiling Wet Market in Woodlands. You will spend about 1-1.5 hours at the market, learning about the regional produce on offer and the local market scene.

Notes: Please do let JJ know if you have any food allergies, meal serving or taste preferences while booking this experience.

PERSONALLY VETTED REVIEW
A Traveling Spoon ambassador visited this host. Here is their personal review.

JJ is extremely friendly and she lovingly welcomed me into her home. She has a nice little herb garden just outside where she grows things like fresh Thai basil, lime leaf, coriander etc. I have never met a Chinese Foodologist before, so I knew immediately I would be in for a treat. Her willingness to educate and share the stories behind the simple ingredients she uses in her dishes, adds so much more to the entire culinary experience. Her passion for food is evident and she offered so many wonderful examples of how to use leftovers, and not waste food. The green mustard rice and the braised pork were delicious, with so many layers of flavor packed in them. A great deal of love and thought goes into JJ’s cooking and it was a delight to learn how to cook Hokkien food.

We had a wonderful experience with JJ and her daughter as JJ shared her knowledge of Chinese cooking. This is a demo, rather than a class, but it is done in her flat and you get the chance to see the dishes come together. JJ is also passionate about her philosophy of food and health. We learned a lot from a warm and generous host, and we ate some delicious food. Highly recommended. Do confirm the address with her after booking.
