Meet Tamami

Tamami believes in the simplicity of Japanese cuisine and delights in teaching homemade Japanese dishes to her students in her cooking class. She prepares fish, meat and vegetables simply but beautifully, using only the freshest of ingredients. Her slow cooked fish marinated in soy and mirin is an example of her signature dish, which is not only easy to prepare but also delicious. Tamami is keen to teach and discuss her love for cooking.

What to expect

In-home meal: (2-6 guests) After Tamami welcomes you at the entrance, slip into your uwabakis (Japanese slippers) and walk into her brightly lit and colorful cooking and dining area. The shelves behind the cooking area are beautifully stacked with Japanese crockery in all shapes, sizes and colors – making it look like art! The Japanese style dining table overlooks the balcony and eating on it is quite an experience. Your meal may include dishes such as chirashi sushi or sushi rolls, miso soup and okonomiyaki (Japanese savoury pancake) or yakisoba (wheat noodles), takoyaki (octopus balls) and karaage (Japanese fried chicken).

Cooking experience: (2-6 guests) Spend about an hour in Tamami's studio kitchen learning how to make soup and different types of sushi or 1-2 Japanese homemade dishes from scratch. You will have a hands-on cooking opportunity to learn the secrets behind her preparation of these popular Japanese dishes.

Notes: Since Tamami speaks limited English, her friend Eri will help with translation.

Traveler reviews

Tamami was at the entrance of the apartment building to greet me in. She was keen to teach and discuss the many things she loves about cooking. In the cooking class I learnt to make soup and 5 different types of sushi from scratch. Tamami even provided a quirky handwritten guide on how to cook the dishes and even guided me through the process. My favorite dish was the slow cooked fish marinated with soy and sugar. With Tamami cooking you can always expect a delicious meal!! - Traveling Spoon Ambassador, Anagha
