Meet Somkid

Somkid was born and raised in the province of Trat located in Eastern Thailand. It is no wonder Somkid, otherwise known as “Chef Kid,” is the amazing cook he is today, as his mother owned her own local Thai food stall and his father was a fisherman. Still in his childhood he realized he had a passion for food as he spent quality time helping his mother prepare delectable dishes. Somkid then moved to work in restaurants in the beachside city of Pattaya and has been an award-winning chef ever since. Guests who book with Somkid will enjoy his excellently prepared dishes as well as his good company, both of which make for a memorable experience. Somkid also enjoys practicing his English with others and loves to meet people from around the world. On occasion, you may be joined at the dining table by Somkid's partner.

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

In-home meal: (1-4 guests) Somkid lives in an impressive condo north of Bangkok’s city center. His condo is a towering, luxury building. Luckily for guests, his home is on the 35th floor and has an amazing view of the city including a great view of the well-known Elephant "Chang" Tower (a building that actually looks like an elephant). Somkid’s home is cozy and can hold up to four people comfortably. It is decorated with an abundance of greenery, and his jungle-like balcony is practically overflowing with beautiful orchids and plants. A professional chef for over 15 years, Somkid promises diners delicious and unique Thai dishes, recipes of which have been handed down to him by his mother. Some of the dishes you can expect to eat include vegetable tempura made with flowers, colorful tamarind soup, larp (minced meat salad), and much more. He also exudes his creativity in inventing curries of all sorts. End your meal with a sweet Thai dessert such as khaoniao mamuang (mango on sticky rice).

Cooking experience: (1-4 guests) Join Somkid in his kitchen and participate in a hands-on cooking class at his condo. His time as a professional chef really shines through as he shows you how to cut each ingredient not only to bring out its flavor but also to serve in an aesthetically pleasing way. Somkid is very keen on food display, and makes sure that every dish you create is beautiful (almost too pretty to eat). Somkid is incredibly efficient in the kitchen cooking one mouthwatering dish is cooking while you prepare another. Time in-between creating each dish will be spent eating delicious fresh fruit and enjoying Somkid’s radiant personality and view of his micro garden and of the sprawling city and beyond.

Market visit: (1-4 guests) After meeting Somkid at the Kamphaeng Phet station of the MRT subway, you will make the short walk to the Or Tor Kor Market. Ranked among the world’s top ten fresh food markets by CNN Travel, it is one of the largest fruit markets in Bangkok. It offers some of the best quality food produce in the city, including organic produce. It is also chock full of some of the tastiest (and strangest) of Thai and Asian fruits and vegetables. There is an abundance of seafood, curries and spices, tasty drink and food vendors, as well as a colorful orchid market just adjacent to the food market. Somkid will pick up any last-minute ingredients at the market before you make your way back to the MRT to venture to his condo nearby. You will then prepare all your delicious meals with Bangkok’s city skyline acting as a stunning backdrop while you do so.

Notes: The experience cost includes transportation to and from the MRT station and his home.

Traveler reviews

Somkid really impressed me with his culinary skills. His time as a professional chef shone through during our cooking experience together. His meals were some of the best Thai dishes I have ever had, and even though I was so incredibly full we finished every bite! Somkid is so friendly and nice and is working on his English. I had to listen carefully as to not miss out on what he was explaining, but overall we had little confusion in terms of communication and had a great cooking experience and meal.

This information will be emailed to you to the email address you used to sign up, and will also be visible on your Traveling Spoon profile.

All prices are noted as per person prices unless otherwise specified (typically transportation is charged on a per car basis, but otherwise all prices are per person).
