Meet Dimitar and Kremena

Kremena and Dimitar live with their beautiful daughter and cat in a quiet residential area in Sofia. Dimitar studied in an international culinary school and has been a professional chef for the past 10 years. Kremena is trained as a doctor and currently she works in the field of clinical research. They both share a deep passion for travel, good food and cooking, especially homemade meals. Dimitar's cooking blends traditional recipes with some unusual flavors and ingredients. They are an easy-going couple, with Dimitar cooking and Kremena taking care of the guest's comfort.

“We love traveling the world so we think that when we don't travel we could have the world visit us in our home. We would love to share our table and have a glass of wine with you!"

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

In-home meal: (1-4 guests) Kremena and Dimitar’s lovely home is situated in a quiet neighborhood with panoramic views of the Vitosha Mountain from their balcony. The living room is spacious; and beautifully decorated with souvenirs from around the world, as well as a hammock. The meal you will be served is cooked according to the traditions in Bulgarian cuisine using fresh and seasonal ingredients. Dimitar is the artistic and innovative one; he loves to experiment with ingredients and will surprise you with a unique dish that would be his own creation! Your meal will be served at the dining table and might include dishes such as tarator (cold cucumber soup) or banitsa (a traditional pastry pie with cheese), zucchini and bell pepper salad or red peppers in tomato sauce with white cheese and guvech (vegetable and meat stew served in a clay pot) or moussaka (minced meat and potato casserole). You will end your meal with something sweet, a typical Bulgarian dessert made with sour milk, honey and walnuts and stunning views from their balcony towards the city and the mountain.

Cooking experience: (1-10 guests) Join Kremena and Dimitar in their kitchen to cook some of their favorite Bulgarian dishes in a hands-on Sofia cooking class. Learn to make stuffed peppers with rice and meat or mish-mash (onions, peppers, tomatoes, cheese and eggs) and tarator (cold soup made of Bulgarian yogurt, cucumbers, nuts and garlic). You can expect to cook together for about 1 hour, before sitting down to enjoy the meal you helped prepare at their dining table.

Please note that if your group is larger than 3, you will learn to cook in shifts as Kremena's kitchen can only accommodate 4 people at a time.

Market visit: (1-3 guests) Meet Kremena and Dimitar at their home and drive 20 min in their car to the Zhenski Pazar market. It is one of Sofia’s oldest markets where you can find produce, honey, wine as well as clothing and pottery. Walk through the market with Kremena and Dimitar and get immersed in Bulgarian market life, learning about regional produce that is sold by the vendors here. Purchase a few ingredients before returning to their home for your cooking class.

Notes: Kremena and Dimitar can offer vegetarian and vegan meals on request.

PERSONALLY VETTED REVIEW
A Traveling Spoon ambassador visited this host. Here is their personal review.

If you are eager to try traditional Bulgarian cuisine with a bit of modern touch, I strongly recommend Kremena & Dimitar’s home. You will get the best view towards Sofia and its home mountain Vitosha from the 18th floor. Their cozy apartment is located in a quiet and easily accessible neighborhood. As a professional chef, Dimitar takes care of the food preparation, while Kremena is making sure you feel comfortable. Once everything is prepared, you will be amazed how beautifully decorated and delicious the dishes are! I can guarantee you will not find something similar in restaurants. The delicious food and the hospitality of Kremena and Dimitar makes visiting their home an unforgettable experience. My favorite dish was the tarator and moussaka, I have never had such an interesting variation of moussaka!

Dining in Dimitri and Kremena’s flat on the eighteenth floor was like dining on a fluffy cloud. The food was honest and flavourful, the conversation fun and contributed to an enjoyable evening. If you’re visiting Sofia don’t miss this experience!

We spent a magical evening with Kremena and Dimitar! They were the highlight of our trip to Bulgaria. We spent the first part of the class at an outdoor Farmer's Market shopping for ingredients for our meal. Then on to their beautiful home with a penthouse view of the city. We had so much fun learning new dishes. The food was delicious and both Dimitar and Kremena are so knowledgeable. What a charming couple. Would definitely recommend this cooking class.
