Meet Manuela

Food is the joy of life for Manuela! She finds cooking to be a ton of fun and believes that food is how you learn about local culture. Manuela learned to cook from her mother and grandmother in Sicily where culture and passion for food are part of everyday life. She was always eager to learn about new dishes and honed her culinary skills experimenting with recipes from cookbooks. She moved to Florence to study architecture and became especially interested in the Tuscan culinary tradition and the origin of their recipes. After a decade of work experience in restaurants and a decade teaching Italian language, food and culture, she decided to start teaching home cooking classes that are intimate, educational and fun.

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

Cooking experience: (2-6 guests) Meet Manuela at her classic Florentine home and enjoy a cup of coffee before joining her in her colorful kitchen for your authentic seasonal Italian cooking class. Here you will learn about the history of the dishes you cook and the reasons behind the choice of ingredients. You will learn to cook a traditional Italian meal from recipes that have been passed down through generations in her family. Your hands-on cooking class will last about three hours.

You will learn to cook four dishes from scratch, an antipasto like fried zucchini blossoms or seasonal crostini, a first course of fresh pasta like spaghetti alla chitarra or linguine with a seasonal sauce, a second course like chicken cacciatore or meatballs along with a side dish, and a dessert like tiramisu or panna cotta. Enjoy learning about the tips and techniques involved in authentic Italian homemade cooking before you sit down at the table to share the four-course meal you helped prepare with host Manuela. Enjoy your meal over prosecco and wine. Please note that the sauces in your pasta will change depending on the season, for example, fresh tomato sauce from scratch in the summer or artichokes and pancetta in the winter. Manuela’s husband Simon and her children may join you for your meal whenever they are around.

Notes: Wine is included in the cost of your experience.

Languages spoken: English, Italian

PERSONALLY VETTED REVIEW
A Traveling Spoon ambassador visited this host. Here is their personal review.

Manuela was wonderful at sharing her knowledge of the process. She chooses traditional Italian recipes and walks through each step of the process, showing you tricks to be successful. Her bright and colourful kitchen is a reflection of her personality. The fried zucchini flowers were light, crunchy and delicious. While they weren't there for our class, it's clear that sometimes her daughters will be there and they must have big fun personalities as well. I got to know traditional Italian cuisine with a traditional Italian!
