Meet Keiko

Keiko is not just an enthusiastic home chef, she’s a professional food stylist. Her love of food started when she was just four years old and she started cooking with her mom. As the years passed Keiko’s enthusiasm grew, leading her to take cooking classes worldwide, start a career as a food stylist, and of course, join Traveling Spoon! Join her in her family home, where she and her husband are raising their three children to love food just as much as they do. You might even get to meet the kids, but if not you’ll still see their artistic scribbles on the walls!

Curious to know more? Read a recent guest’s blog about her afternoon with Keiko here.

Please note that on days that Keiko is not available to host at home, she hosts at her cooking studio near Kichijoji Station.

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

In-home meal: (1-6 guests) Join Keiko and members of her family around the table to feast on the flavors of a home-cooked meal. Along with the delicious fare, you’ll enjoy sake, tea and friendly conversation (with the help of the translator). This is your chance to experience a family meal in Japan - come prepared with questions, or allow yourself to be whisked away by the moment! The afternoon experience is made complete with an informal Japanese tea ceremony, during which Keiko will demonstrate her secret technique to achieving the perfect matcha foam. Sample menu: Teriyaki Chicken, Miso Soup, Chirashi Sushi, Mochi (dessert)

Cooking experience: (1-6 guests) Enjoy the break from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo and join Keiko for an authentic, home-cooked Japanese meal. The cooking class will take place in Keiko’s family home, in the modern kitchen designed by her architect husband. It’s the perfect setting to learn just how Keiko turns simple, fresh ingredients into beautiful, creative interpretations of traditional Japanese cuisine. She’ll teach you how to make two or three dishes, which could include her super tender teriyaki chicken. Perfectly dressed in a marinade of mirin and soy sauce, it will instantly make your mouth water. Or perhaps it’s Keiko’s take on chirashi sushi, a traditional rice dish dotted with seasonal, fresh ingredients that will make your tastebuds dance. The cooking experience will last about an hour and a half, at which point you’ll all sit down together to eat!

Market visit: (1-6 guests) Meet Keiko and her translator at the train station and walk together to the small neighborhood yaoya (local greengrocer). There, she will teach you about different vegetables and ingredients that are staples in Japanese kitchens. Via a translator, she’ll gladly answer any questions you have, so embrace your curiosity and don’t be shy! Please note, this is not a bustling market but a small neighborhood shop that sells the essentials.

Notes: Like many Japanese people, Keiko speaks limited English. She will arrange to have a friend or family member join your experience to help with translation.

The market visit is only available on weekdays.

We loved our time with our hosts! It was a true treat! I would recommend it to anyone.

I enjoyed my Traveling Spoon experience as I was able to see how a local lived and see a smaller, quieter neighborhood of Tokyo instead of just tourist spots. Keiko and her translator met me at the station and we went to some of the nearby produce and fish markets. They told me about some of ingredients and answered my questions about what everything was called so I would be able to find substitutes at stores here. The food was delicious and I look forward to trying to make similar recipes at home.

We had such a wonderful lunch with Keiko and her family! The food was incredible, and Keiko was great at explaining (through a translator) what she was cooking, and the background of each dish. What really made the afternoon special was sitting down around the table with the whole family. Her youngest daughter was playful and funny, and her son even did an aikido demonstration for us. It was clear that Keiko and her family made every effort to make sure that the experience was special and memorable. Next time we are in Tokyo, we will be sure to sign up for another cooking class with her! Thank you, Keiko and family, for such a fun and delicious afternoon!

We had an incredible experience visiting Keiko and her husband in their beautifully designed home. It was a rare insight being invited into a Japanese home and experiencing the unique cuisine that our host prepared. Her take on traditional recipes was inspired and truly made our lunch sublime. Keiko's generosity in time, conversation and breadth of dishes she effortlessly prepared made it a truly memorable experience.

Keiko was an amazing host. Having a translator there was really helpful and the whole experience still felt very genuine and personal even without direct communication at all time (Keiko does speak a little English). The food was terrific and we learned many more dishes than expected. The recipes are ones that are simple enough I actually think I can replicate them on my own. The whole experience was wonderful.

Simply wonderful! An adventure getting out to the suburbs by subway train. Keiko was charming and Mari the interpreter was delightful as well. Loved Keiko's home, the food (incredible) and the conversation (stimulating). We spent four days in Tokyo and this was definitely the highlight.
