Meet Jessie

Jessie’s friends always told her that her mom’s food was the best, so Jessie did what young professionals do: she started a food blog highlighting the traditional Korean dishes handed down from her mother.

“I love cooking for other people - I feel happy when I see them eat my food. I think my mom and my grandmother feel the same way.”

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

In-home meal: (2-6 guests) Jessie cooks using her mother’s homemade gochujang (a pungent condiment made from fermented soybeans, red chili, and glutinous rice) and deonjang (a thick, soy bean paste), which are essential Korean ingredients that are rarely made from scratch these days. The meal will be served on beautiful ceramic dishes that her mother makes.

Your meal might include bulgogi (stir-fried, thinly sliced beef with grated Asian pear, ginger, garlic, and soy sauce), her mother's homemade kimchi, japchae (glass noodles) or homemade doenjang jjigae (tofu stew). Finish with seasonal fruits (perhaps grown on her uncle’s farm) and fruit tea.

Cooking experience: (2-6 guests) Join Jessie in her small but efficient kitchen to learn to cook some of her favorite Korean dishes. You will learn to cook two to three dishes and you will then enjoy them along with other dishes that have been prepared in advance.

Notes: Jessie hosts only on weekends, she offers both lunch and dinner experiences on weekends only.

Languages spoken: Korean, English

Jessie gave very good instructions on how to find her place and she was well prepared for our cooking session. We enjoyed talking to her about Korean life and we enjoyed the casual homely atmosphere.

We had a wonderful evening with Jessie she was very hospitable and went above and beyond to make our experience great. The only down side was we thought the class was going to be more hands on with everyone cooking. It was more of a demonstration with a bit of chopping and mixing for one person in the group.an experience of having a meal in a Korean home. Still very enjoyable.

Jessie was so welcoming! It was awesome to connect with someone from another culture so personally, and enjoy good food together. We had a wonderful experience.

Jessie gave us a great cooking course, with food we could easily cook ourselves, and provided a wonderful dinner time together.

Awesome experience! Jessie is a woman who loves to cook. We enjoyed cooking, eating, and chatting so much. Our conversation ranged from "foods" to "educational system" to "FTA with other countries". It was experience that hard to find elsewhere. Highly recommended!

I'm so happy that I found the Traveling Spoon website! I really wanted to take a cooking class in Seoul, but I actually dislike group cooking classes because they lack the real aspect of true cooking by locals of a certain cuisine. It was perfect to meet and cook with Jessie in her home- she was so sweet, cool and a great cook and teacher. She answered all of my questions about Korean food and actually no joke prepared my favorite Korean meal ever!! She had purchased really quality beef for the Bulgogi we made and it changed my view of Korean bbq :) I'm craving it again now! And also, emailing with Traveling Spoon was great- you guys were really responsive and helpful in accommodating my last minute request!

I love Korean food, it was my first visit to Seoul so I thought it would be nice to try the Traveling Spoon experience. I was paired with Jessie, once we made contact to discuss and plan the dinner I was confident it would be a great meal. The food was excellent, Jessie had put in a lot of effort and care to select the menu that was appropriate for the season. It was all quality ingredients used and prepared perfectly. Jessie was a wonderful host, we had a great conversation over and after dinner and it was sad to have to say goodnight.

it was a great new experience to get to know the local and culture, by exchanging stories even in a short time. we were open to each other so that the conversations were very fun. My host is really nice and friendly. The meal is great, I got to try the home-made dish that I won't find in any restaurant. The ambiance is warm and welcoming. I enjoy the experience a lot.

I didn't know anyone when I arrived in Seoul, but through Traveling Spoon I not only had an amazing home-cooked traditional Korean meal in a local's home, but I also made a new friend. I would highly recommend Traveling Spoon to others - to be both a guest and a host!
