Meet Golf

Born and raised in the capital, Golf’s cooking is rooted in central Thailand but heavily influenced by the spicy cuisine and fresh seafood dishes characteristic of the southern province of Songkhla, the family home. Golf’s love for cooking came from his feisty mother who he describes as “naughty” in the kitchen. She loved experimenting with Thai classics – to the shocking dismay of the Thai food traditionalists – and always turned cooking dinner into a whimsical family event. Golf enjoys teaching people to cook Thai and hosts a casual meal in his godmother Katharina's apartment (a 5th floor walk-up!) who also happens to be a great-grandmother originally from Finland. Join Golf and his godmother for dinner and be part of this family tradition!

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

In-home meal: (2-6 guests) As the sun sets, enjoy the breeze and panoramic views of the glittering Bangkok skyline as you dine alfresco on his spacious balcony of budding lotus flowers and singing birds (weather permitting). Some of Golf's specialties include freshly caught squid stuffed with minced pork, then simmered in sweet green curry (coconut milk, finger root, galangal, kafir lime, lemongrass, chilies, garlic and onion); a delicious dipping sauce called nam pu or “crab cream” made with onion, chilies, and garlic; and stir-fried shrimp with cauliflower, garlic, black pepper, fish sauce and a dash of sugar.

Cooking experience: (2-4 guests) Join Golf in his small but charming kitchen to learn to cook Southern Thai cuisine which is influenced by strong flavors and spices. You will learn to prepare 2-3 creative Thai dishes which will include at least one seafood dish before sharing the meal you helped prepare with Golf. The cooking portion of the experience lasts 1.5 hours.

Market visit: (2-4 guests) Start your experience at the bustling Klong Toey market, Bangkok’s largest fresh market located on the banks of the Chao Phraya River. Help Golf carefully select the ingredients for your meal before hopping into a tuk tuk for the 15-minute journey to Golf’s godmother's rooftop apartment in the leafy, up-and-coming neighborhood of Sathorn Soi 1.

Notes: Please note that Golf hosts a casual experience at his godmother, Katharina's apartment. This is a 5th floor walk-up. There are fans but no AC in the apartment so it can get very warm, especially during hot summer nights. Golf does not cook beef or duck but loves seafood and pork or chicken.

My host and his friends gave us really enjoyable experience. We enjoyed not only cooking and dinner but also shopping in a huge local market. It was really fun.

We had a lovely evening with Golf and his godmother Katharina. They were so warm, friendly and welcoming. It was great to be invited into a local's home and cook together the dishes we later ate, in the beautiful outdoor terrace. The menu was so thoughtful - Golf kept in mind our dietary likes and dislikes and ensured we were entertained by his stories. It felt like visiting a friend's home in another part of the world. My favorite dish was Pla tod kamin (fried garlic and turmeric fish) - it was so simple to make and yet so flavorful. Am excited to do another Traveling Spoon experience again.
