Meet Farid

Meet Farid, a photographer in his twenties who works for a humanitarian organization. Farid and his girlfriend live in a fun, funky, art-filled apartment in Colonia Napoles, which is one of Mexico City's upcoming neighborhoods for young entrepreneurs and artists.

Born and raised in DF (Mexico City), Farid grew up surrounded by a family of food lovers and fondly remembers weekly Friday dinners with more than 50 guests! His grandmother taught him to appreciate traditional Mexican flavors which he combines with new techniques. He likes to experiment in the kitchen, sometimes taking a modernist approach to classic dishes. Farid travels throughout Mexico for his work as a photographer and documentarian, and loves learning about regional culinary specialities as he travels.

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

In-home meal: (1-4 guests) Farid invites you for an evening of food, drinks, hospitality, and Mexican traditions. Your simple, casual meal will begin with a welcome beverage and an appetizer such as handmade blue corn tortilla chips and freshly made guacamole, followed by a main course, perhaps his Michoacán-style carnitas tacos served with roasted radishes, and fresh seasonal vegetables. Finish the meal with dessert over great conversation.

For an additional cost Farid offers artisanal Mexican beers, wines or good quality mezcal that are carefully selected to accent the food being served.

Cooking experience: (1-2 guests) Join Farid in his small but efficient kitchen to learn to prepare a simple and modern Mexican meal. You can expect the cooking portion of your experience to last about an hour before you enjoy the meal you helped prepare together.

Market visit: (1-2 guests) After meeting at Farid's apartment, hop on the subway for a quick 3-stop ride to Mercado San Juan, a bustling marketplace filled with traditional produce, butchers, as well as hard to find international gourmet products. Farid will take you through the maze of stalls and show you some of his favorite vendors.

Notes: Please note Farid's apartment is on the third floor and there is no elevator in his building.

PERSONALLY VETTED REVIEW
A Traveling Spoon ambassador visited this host. Here is their personal review.

Farid was a great Traveling Spoon host. His eyes light up when he talks about Friday dinners with his family growing up (50 people every Friday - basically a weekly Thanksgiving feast) and he's very sincere in his desire to bring this type of social, communal dining experience to people traveling to Mexico City. Farid travels all over the country for his job and he can talk to you about the culture and food not only from Mexico City but every state in the country, which is an extraordinarily rare perspective.

I like to do cooking classes when I travel these days. I found the Traveling Spoon website on Trip Advisor and it had a few options for México City. I booked the market tour and cooking class combination and was soon in touch with our host Farid Estrada. He cooks a meal in his apartment in Colonia Napoles, close to our apartment in Roma Sur so he suggested that the market tour be at Mercado Medellin. This was perfect for us as it was in walking distance. We met up at the market around 9:00 am. I appreciate having a guide in a market where the food offerings include many things that are new to me or that I just haven’t tried yet. The best item in this category is huitelcoche, the bluish fungus that forms on the corn and is used in many dishes with its delicate, earthy flavour. Farid made this a central part of his tortilla offering back in the apartment. We also enjoyed making some of the dishes under his supervision. A tour like this involves many things that make it so worthwhile doing. The food is, of course, the main purpose of the tour but there is a lot of cultural learning layered onto the visit to the market, for example. As we left the market Farid wanted to show us a unique community garden nearby. He explained how a vacant construction site was turned into a productive community centre with gardens, workshops, performance spaces and meeting places by locals acting collectively. The garden is called Huerto Roma Verde if you are visiting Mexico City. Check it out.

Overall, I would say we had an average experience. The host was really friendly but the food was too casual. It did not seem like the host had taken enough time to prepare and present the meal properly. There were no separate courses or serving dishes. The tastiest item was the mole sauce that was actually store bought. So was dessert which was just ice-cream. The night before we had an amazing meal of local delicacies at a nice restaurant for a 3rd of the price. The host himself was very friendly and made us feel welcome.

Farid and Fernanda were lovely, welcoming and gracious hosts. We felt immediately at ease and able to enjoy the experience of learning about regional foods and ingredients, as well as having a relaxed evening in the comfort of a home environment. In addition, they were able to recomend points of interest and provide local insights. They were really easy to spend the evening with exchanging stories, laughing and leaving more about one another's cuisine and cultures.
