Meet Lamrawee Alyssa

Alyssa is a food and art lover as well as a business owner in the Land of Smiles. She has been a professional Thai chef in both Asia and Europe for 10 years. She decided to leave the restaurant business to work out of the comfort of her own home and teach others the culinary skills she has mastered over the years. In addition to wanting to share her love for Thai cooking, she also wants guests to be able to take with them the skills they have acquired during her class, to share with their friends and family back home. Alyssa wants to share her family recipes that have been passed down to her, through generations.

What to expect

In-home meal: (1-4 guests) Alyssa lives in a beautiful, gated suburb on the outskirts of Bangkok. Her home is equipped with a large, open kitchen and dining area. After you sip on your welcome drink - a refreshing tamarind juice, you will join Alyssa at the dinning table for an authentic Thai meal. Some of the dishes you can expect to eat include pad Thai with prawns stir-fried in a homemade tamarind sauce, beef massaman (Muslim style curry from Southern Thailand), rice paper rolls, prawn green curry and deep-fried, edible flowers. That's right ... flowers! Your meal will end with a dessert such as kha nom mo kaeng (taro and coconut custard).

Cooking experience: (1-4 guests) You will join Alyssa and her help in the kitchen for a hands-on cooking class, where you will learn how to make 2-3 dishes that you will be eating later. The cooking class is fast-paced, it might last for about an hour and you will learn a lot about the ingredients you are working with along the way. Alyssa goes over the basics of cooking for those who have never stepped foot in a kitchen as well as shares her own personal techniques she utilized as a professional chef.

Market visit: (1-5 guests) After being picked up at the Bang Wa station of the BTS sky train, you will drive through a scenic route to visit a local market, passing by a handful of stunning temples along the way. It is about a 20-minute drive. You will then explore Talad Prangen, an incredible local market very close to Alyssa's home. Here you will find an abundance of fresh seafood, vegetables, and even some drink vendors. Alyssa is well-informed on ingredients and will explain what it is you will be using for the day as you meander through the handful of stalls. After gathering all of your ingredients, Alyssa will drive you to her home where you will prepare and cook your meal together.

Notes: The experience cost includes transportation, with pickup at Exit 2 of Bang Wa station on the BTS line at 11am and drop back to Bang Wa station at 3pm. Bang Wa station on the BTS line is around a 30 minute sky train ride from the city center. From there it is a 20 minute scenic drive to Alyssa's home, with a stop at the local market to buy ingredients for your cooking class.

Traveler reviews

With Alyssa, travelers should be prepared for an afternoon of delicious food and laughs. She was super accommodating to my vegetarian needs, which was very important to me. Alyssa is great company and we had a great day overall. I loved the deep fried flower balls we prepared and ate - it was so different and delicious. And one of my favorite things she did was make the food dance. “Turn up the heat and make the food dance,” Alyssa said, and she flipped the food inside her wok! - Traveling Spoon Ambassador Kelly

Alyssa was an excellent host. She took us on a tour of her local market, showing us various indigenous ingredients and explaining how to properly select them -- from salted shrimp to produce to rice -- and what we could substitute for them back at home. After the market we went to her home kitchen where a mise-en-place was waiting for us and she went through a demonstration of how to prepare everything, from as basic as chopping shallots to making curry paste, again explaining what shortcuts could be taken or adjustments could be made in the interest of time and taste. Finally we went on to cook two dishes ourselves, a green curry and a pork laab, mincing the pork by hand and using some of the fresh curry paste Alyssa showed us how to make. Alyssa really went over and above by also showing us how she makes her version of pad thai, preparing us a sticky rice dessert with Chinese tea, and giving us a small parting gift ("raspberry" rice) as we mentioned the trip was part of our honeymoon. We would not hesitate to recommend Alyssa to anyone looking for an off-the-beaten track experience. Her home is in a nicer Bangkok suburb, which gives you a chance to see what life is like outside the smog, traffic and chaos of the city. It's worth noting that she worked internationally (both in Europe and other countries in Asia), so it was very interesting to hear about her own experiences abroad. - Brandon and Sari
