Meet Dimitris

Dimitris first learned to cook when he was 12 years old when he and his best friend were bored after school. They pulled a cookbook off the shelf and taught themselves to make crepes. After some success in the kitchen Dimitris’ confidence bloomed and he spent more and more time in the kitchen, learning classic Greek dishes from his mother and grandmother and experimenting with recipes he found in cookbooks and later, online. Dimitris dreams of owning a restaurant someday and is now learning to cook in a professional kitchen. Other than cooking his other passions are traveling, tasting food from all over the world and meeting new people. Dimitris hopes to introduce his son to people from all over the world!

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

In-home meal: (1-6 guests) Join Dimitris, his wife Ioana, and their toddler son Aederis for a healthy, traditional home cooked Greek meal in their modern apartment. For starters, you will begin with traditional Greek cheeses (with Feta of course) and a special cheese called krasotiri, cured with red wine from the island of Kos. You will also try flogeres expertly fried in Greek olive oil, as well as by feta baked and wrapped with filo dough, honey, and sesame seeds. Dimitris’s signature dish is his own special creation of two traditional Greek salads with croutons. The main entree may be a slow roasted rack of Goat or Lamb accompanied with herbed spices, savory rosemary, and potatoes. If you are vegetarian gemista (stuffed vegetables with rice and herbs) will be your main course. You will end with dessert, an expertly crafted halva cake with semolina, cinnamon, and almonds. The dishes may change as the ingredients are seasonal and Dimitris likes to use only the freshest ingredients that is locally available.

Cooking experience: (1-6 guests) Learn to prepare a variety of simple, flavorful Greek dishes that can be easily replicated at home in this Athens cooking class. Dimitris will teach you to make stuffed tomatoes, salad and filling for a pie. This is hands-on cooking class and will last for one hour before you sit down to share a meal together.

Market visit: (1-6 guests) There is no specific market in the area, just some local shops where you can buy quality products. Dimitris usually buys his ingredients from these shops and he is happy to give you a walk around the locality and explain more in-depth about each ingredient used in Greek cooking. Every Thursday and Saturday morning there is a farmers market and Dimitris is happy to take you there in case you book on those days.

Notes: Dimitris can offer Vegetarian and Vegan meals on request. The meal cost includes 1-2 glasses of wine per person.

PERSONALLY VETTED REVIEW
A Traveling Spoon ambassador visited this host. Here is their personal review.

Dimitris invited me to his home just inside Athens downtown for a delightful meal with his kind family. His generosity, restaurant experience and knowledge of Greek cuisine resulted in a fabulous meal covering a variety of flavors and textures. The experience was amazing and his knowledge of Greek history and English made conversation just as enriching as the food. His warm family made me feel at home and gave me a dining experience easily better than any restaurant I went to in Athens. I will never forget this experience!
