Meet Gerry

Gerry together with his daughter Ciara run their family owned seafood and oyster trading company. A marine biologist by training, Gerry has worked in the seafood industry for many decades and is passionate about showing travellers how to grow and recognize high quality oysters, their primary seafood product. Ciara joined her father at the company after working for many years doing youth development in Zambia. Gerry and his family are from New Quay, a rural village located on the south shore of Galway Bay in Ireland. It is located at the foothills of the Burren, a world renowned Geopark site with truly unique flora and fauna. This area is known for its clean grade A waters that have produced distinctive and delicious oysters and shellfish for centuries. The pristine water with nutrients fed by underground streams to the sea from the Burren provides nutrients that make these Flaggy shore oysters truly special.

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

Food tour: (1-20 guests) Meet Gerry and/or Ciara at New Quay Pier, which is located mid-way between Galway and the Cliffs of Moher (45 mins by car from each) and experience a genuine and entertaining introduction to the world of oysters during this tour which we have called "Shuck Off". Learn how oysters are stored in their seawater tanks with continuous fresh seawater pumped from the ocean just outside their windows. See the many sea creatures that inhabit the seabed outside our premises and feel free to "play" with them in our amazing touch tanks. Tour the facilities and hear about the history of their family business. Pick your own oysters from their seawater tanks and learn how to shuck them from a professional before you enjoy all you can eat of them together with nice specially selected wine and your choice of condiments such as lemon, horseradish or Tabasco sauce. After your tour, feel free to take a walk along the wonderful, scenic Flaggy shore walkway located beside the facility. Experience the wonderful sunsets as you watch the sun go down on Galway Bay and feel truly satisfied!

Notes: Gerry is flexible with timing so if you prefer another time, let him know when you make your booking. In the summer when the sun sets later, you are welcome to start your tour at 5pm and enjoy the sunset on Flaggy Shore after! A glass of wine is included in the price of this experience.

For groups 10+ we offer a discounted rate. Please enquire at reservations@travelingspoon.com

Thoroughly enjoyed 2+ hours with Gerry. We learned quite a bit about the oyster life cycle, oyster farming and the local marine life, followed by an oyster shucking lesson. Then, a huge number of oysters were poured on our table, for a literally “all you can shuck” feast, accompanied by a delicious white wine. Gerry is informative and charming. A very, very fun and memorable afternoon.

This tour is a wonderful introduction to Ireland's sustainable oyster farming and the wildlife in Galway Bay. After an informative overview, we learned to shuck oysters. We wrapped up with all-you-can-eat oysters (self-shucked) and a bottle of wine.

We had a great time on our way from Galway. After a concise briefing about the bay and other marine animals, Gerry talked us through oyster farming. It has been educational, but also entertaining. After that we went on learning how to shuck off the oysters, before getting to the tasting part. They prepared differnet condiments (lemon, hot sauce, vinegars). Don't forget to pay a visit to the nearby and name giving Flaggy Shore. There is a story about that, too. No spoilers here.
