Meet Catalina

Catalina is a graphic designer and a professional chef, who has a specialization in bakery and pastry arts. Although she first learned to cook as a child when she assisted her father to make paella! Even though she has a background in graphic design her passion is food and cooking. She received a grant for excellence at the culinary institute, which allowed her to attend pastry school and develop her deep passion for food.

With family roots spanning from the coast to mountains of Colombia, Catalina marries her heritage with her passion for cooking and teaching the culinary arts, to deliver extraordinarily delicious experiences. An experience at Catalina’s modern apartment allows travelers to experience daily life in the dynamic city of Medellin. You’ll be welcomed into this Colombian experience like old friends.

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

In-home meal: (1-4 guests) Catalina lives in a modern apartment in the Pontevedra, Envigado neighborhood - it is a mix of old homes and newer apartment buildings. As a graphic designer and pastry chef, her apartment is clean with modern touches. Her home has a small balcony with beautiful views to the surrounding neighborhood. You will be welcomed with fresh guandiolo (fruit juice sweetened with cane juice) while she introduces you to Colombian food and culture.

Catalina’s family heritage is from three different areas of Colombia and includes coastal and Andean food. She mixes her graphic design background with her passion for food and creates an experience with a history of the people involved. She also loves to serve food you can experience by picking it up with your hands and interacting with the food. A few traditional Colombian dishes that Catalina may serve are yuca and arracacha chips with homemade guacamole, patacones (fried and smashed plantains), bandeja paisa (traditional dish from Antioquia, contains ingredients like, beans, rice, meat, salsa and bacon) and coconut flan for dessert.

Cooking experience: (1-4 guests) Catalina offers a hands-on experience, where you will get to cook along with her in her kitchen. The cooking portion of the experience will last for 2 hours and you will learn to make an appetizer, main dish and dessert. Learn to cook with your host before sitting down to enjoy the meal you helped prepare.

Market visit: (1-4 guests) Catalina will take you to the Plaza de la America market which is 2km from her apartment. After she meets you at her home, she will drive you in her car to the market. Plaza de la America is a food market stocked with fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, and other groceries. Catalina will give you a tour of this local market and you may buy fresh ingredients like tree tomato (pitaya) to use in your cooking class later.

Notes: Catalina can offer Vegetarian and Vegan meals on request. You can bring wine or beer if you like because she do not offer alcohol.

PERSONALLY VETTED REVIEW
A Traveling Spoon ambassador visited this host. Here is their personal review.

Catalina has a passion for food and her goal is to connect and bring love to others through food. Every single dish was delicious and prepared with her guests’ dietary needs in mind. Catalina is an excellent hostess and easily converses with anyone. She was friendly and welcoming throughout our pre-experience conversations and once I arrived in person her warmth and friendliness continued. Catalina is truly a wonderful chef and hostess! She was personable and friendly sharing her Colombian heritage and cooking skills. She created an entirely vegan menu and had meat options for my friend. The main dish she chose is almost never cooked as vegetarian in Colombia and typically has pork in it, so it was a treat to have a traditional meal that I would likely have never had the opportunity to taste. Catalina’s warmth and hospitality will have you chatting at the kitchen bar about family recipes and jumping in to learn hands on cooking techniques. She transforms and elevates traditional Colombian cuisine and tailors it to the dietary needs of her guests…always wanting to share her love through her cooking. The food is deliciously and artistically prepared and the sunset city views from the balcony are worth the 5 flights of stairs! It was like I was visiting with an old friend for an afternoon of cooking!

Traveler reviews

Catalina was very accommodating and knowledgeable about the food products available in Colombia, as well as the local culture, way beyond food. We made a traditional Colombian dish, bandeja paisa, which, I guess is more a traditional dish from the area around Medellin, not necessarily all of Colombia. It is basically a sampler plate, made up of three different meats, vegetables, beans and rice. But first, we went to a local market, where we explored and sampled many fruits from Colombia; fruits that are not readily available in other parts of the world. Catalina answered volumes of questions about anything that came up. It was a great afternoon and evening. The small group setting was very conducive to a very positive experience.
