Meet Richenda

Richenda has held a deep fascination for food and cooking from the time she was a young girl! She loved watching her mother throw a loaf of bread in their Aga, the traditional stove and oven that was the hearth of the family. Richenda studied at the Cordon Bleu in London and Switzerland before returning to Dublin where she taught at the first Cordon Blue cooking school in Ireland. Richenda and her husband Michael live in a historic 300-year old family home that Richenda inherited and which has been lovingly restored. She teaches professional cooking demonstrations in her traditional kitchen. Ask to take a peek at the famous Aga stove where you might get to bake a tart or bread! Avid travelers, Richenda and Michael enjoy authentic cuisine on their travels and are delighted to offer creative Irish cuisine to travelers visiting Kilkenny, a charming Irish town southwest of Dublin. Get a feel for true Irish hospitality and cuisine with this lovely couple.

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

In-home meal: (1-15 guests) Meet your hosts Richenda and Michael at their gorgeous home built in the 18th century. Sit down in their living room around a cozy fire and enjoy a cup of tea and scones as you chat with your hosts and hear about the delightful history of their home, which has been in the family for generations. See if you can find the date of her mother and great aunt's wedding day, etched secretly into one of the windows! Weather permitting, Richenda and Michael will take you on a quick tour of the family’s vegetable garden and apple orchard where you might pick a few herbs for your meal. Return to the dining table (either their lovely kitchen farm table or their more formal dining room, depending on the mood) to enjoy Richenda’s creations - either a three-course meal or a creative Irish tasting menu. Your meal might include dishes such as a spring pea and mint soup or beetroot and coconut soup and a main course such as beef and Guinness stew with a side of glazed parsnips or stuffed chicken with mushrooms and spiced vegetables, all served with traditional Irish bread. Your meal will conclude with a dessert of a seasonal Irish tart (made from rhubarb or apples from the garden, depending on the season), rich chocolate rum torte, or a homemade lemon curd meringue roulade.

Cooking experience: (1-15 guests) You will be warmly welcomed by Richenda and Michael into their historic home and enjoy a welcome cup of coffee or tea with biscuits or scones in their gorgeous living room. Next, enter Richenda’s kitchen where you will learn to learn to cook an authentic Irish meal with Richenda’s creative touches from recipes that have been passed down through generations of her family. Your cooking demo will involve watching your host prepare 4-5 dishes from scratch. You will watch her prepare an Irish stew the traditional way (although she and her husband debate about what the traditional way is!) and brown soda bread (her mother’s recipe) and a soup, or dessert. Please note that this is a demonstration, not a hands-on cooking class, and will last about two and a half hours. Enjoy learning about her secret tips and techniques involved in Irish cooking before you sit down at the table to share the meal together over delightful conversation. Your meal might also include a few dishes that Richenda may have prepared in advance.

Traveler reviews

Richenda was very communicative over email before our trip. She and her husband Michael were very welcoming when we arrived and let us roam around their impressive gardens before serving us Guinness stew, mint and Pea soup, homemade bread, potatoes, carrots and broccoli. We also had two rounds of tea and a lot of great conversations. Both of the hosts were entertaining storytellers. We also had a rhubarb pie with homemade ice cream followed by a surprise birthday cake for the birthday girl. This we had to take with us because we were just too full from the rest of the meal. Everything was tasty and we really appreciated a home cooked meal after 10 days on the road. The hosts told us about the history of the house and answered all of our questions. We ended up staying for three hours and would definitely recommend these extremely warm hearted hosts to all travelers. Definitely worth a trip out to Ballyragget!

You can cancel your experience 48 hours or more before your experience date and receive a full refund. To request a cancellation once you have made a booking simply log in and click the "Request Cancellation" link from the bottom of your booking. Your refund will be processed immediately (note it can take up to 10 business days for this refund to post to your credit card statement). Please note that for cancellations within 48 hours of your experience we unfortunately cannot offer a refund; this is because our hosts typically purchase food and begin their preparations up to 48 hours before the experience.

Most of our hosts are able to accommodate dietary restrictions and allergies, including vegetarian and gluten free options. For vegetarian travelers, we have an icon on each host profile to indicate whether that host can also offer a fully vegetarian menu. There is a section in the booking form to note any allergies or dietary restrictions which will be sent directly to your host.

If you have a question about an experience, create a reservation and include your note in the field "Write a note to your host". Once you request a booking you can continue to message your host directly to ask any specific questions. You can always cancel your booking and receive a full refund as long as you cancel 48 hours in advance.

Your host's detailed contact information, including their phone number, address, and direction notes, will all be provided immediately upon successful confirmation of your experience (after your hosts accepts your booking and your credit card is successfully processed). This information will be emailed to you to the email address you used to sign up, and will also be visible on your Traveling Spoon profile.

All prices are noted per person prices unless otherwise specified. Transportation is typically charged on a per car basis, but otherwise all prices are per person. Children aged 5-11 are 50% off, and infants aged 0-4 are free.

Some hosts offer alcohol as an optional add-on for travelers who are of legal drinking age. Pricing for alcohol is visible on the host profile page and includes one to two glasses of wine, beer or local alcohol.

Specific instructions for transportation will be provided in your confirmation details when your booking is confirmed.

Many of our hosts accommodate solo travelers. You can see if a host accepts solo travelers by looking at the traveler range found next to the experience descriptions on the host profile (indicated by the numbers in parentheses next to "In-home meal", "Cooking experience" and "Market visit").
