Meet Mary

Mary is a warm and wonderful host passionate about food and cooking. A local celebrity chef, Mary won a national competition on TV for the best amateur cook in the country! The eldest of three children, Mary stepped in as the cook at home and learned the basics very early. She could never say no to good food and that’s how she developed a keen interest in cooking. She became a cooking instructor at the Howth Castle cookery school where she taught until she recently retired. Mary loves nurturing people through food - her favorite kind of cooking is when she’s having people over for a dinner party!

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

In-home meal: (2-10 guests) Meet your host Mary at her beautiful Victorian home built in the late 1800s and start with a drink and canapé as your host shares stories about life in Sutton. You will then join your host at her dining table to enjoy a seasonal, modern Irish meal. Your meal will include three courses - an appetizer, main and dessert. Your gourmet menu may include dishes such as an appetizer of Howth smoked salmon and dill tower with citrus avocado mousse and micro-herbs, Irish smoked haddock on a bed of spinach drizzled with Irish cream, Howth crab with avocado, grapefruit and cilantro or twice-cooked mushroom soufflé, a main of Irish chicken breast stuffed with mushrooms and parsley in a lime marmalade sauce served with creamed potatoes or pan-fried duck breast in Mary’s signature citrus-soy sauce served with green beans and glazed carrots. Your meal will conclude with a dessert of a raspberry pavlova roulade or chocolate roulade with freshly whipped cream or Bailey’s Irish cheesecake.

Cooking experience: (4-8 guests) Join your host Mary at her large, colorful Provencal-style kitchen with an Aga oven. Learn to cook a seasonal, modern Irish meal from fail-safe recipes that Mary has perfected over the years. Your hands-on cooking class will last about two hours. You will learn to cook 2-3 dishes from scratch, an appetizer, a main dish and a side or dessert. Enjoy learning about how to create a modern Irish meal from an expert cook before you sit down at the table to share the meal you helped prepare with Mary. Please note that as some dishes take a while to prepare, Mary will have a few dishes cooked ahead of time for your meal.

Mary can offer both a hands-on cooking class or a cooking demonstration in which you will watch her prepare a couple of dishes. Please specify what you prefer at the time of booking.

Notes: Mary is happy to create gourmet vegetarian and vegan meals as well for the vegetarians and vegans out there! Let her know your dietary restrictions when making your booking.

Super experience! Mary's house is lovely and filled with furniture and curios from many places. The food was excellent and cooked with care and the hosts are just great. Visitors will also learn interesting things about history, curios and the area. It was a really nice atmosphere and I felt very welcomed.
