Meet Arno

Arno is a professional chef educated in classic and modern French cuisine. He lived in Berlin, Amsterdam, Paris and Lisbon before he settled down in Auckland. After graduating as a cook in Nice on the French Riviera he started his culinary career as a commis at the Relais et Chateaux Hôtel Restaurant Le Mas de Pierre. He was quickly promoted to demi chef de partie where he trained his first apprentice and prepped the famous Sunday brunch for 100 customers. He then went on to work as a second de cuisine at Forum Jorges François in Nice where he led a team of 12 cooks and designed a daily zero-waste menu for 100 people, five times a week. In 2016, just as he was about to embark on a yacht-chef career he met his Kiwi girlfriend in Antibes. Since then he has been fusing the beautiful flavors of Aotearoa with modern French cuisine. In addition to his passion for cooking, Arno enjoys photography, journalism and documentary film making. He looks forward to getting to know Traveling Spoon travelers and hearing about their own unique experiences over great food.

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

In-home meal: (1-5 guests) Arno lives with his partner in a beautiful, heritage building at the heart of the city centre on Queen street. Situated in one of the most vibrant parts of the CBD (Britomart) his apartment location offers direct access to a train station, buses and express airport shuttles. Located 5 minutes from the water and the Viaduct district, the neighborhood is where parties start and finish in the city center. Britomart is where new fashionable shops and restaurants co-exist and thrive. A popular new addition to the area is the Friday Night Market – a foodie paradise which takes place right around the corner from Arno's place. Start with a snack and a glass of wine while relaxing and enjoying a stunning view of the city's main landmark, the Sky Tower, before you start your meal. Your meal may include dishes made with local, seasonal and organic produce whenever available. Your 3-course menu may include a canapé/amuse bouche or soup such as a raspberry-tomato gazpacho, followed by a snapper resting on carrot puree served alongside a sweet potato gratin. Your meal will conclude with a dessert such as the national pavlova, with fresh summer fruits topped by a meringue. Arno designs his menus based on your dietary preferences for you to enjoy fresh healthy gourmet cuisine in the heart of Auckland.

Cooking experience: (1-5 guests) Join professional chef Arno at his brand-new spacious home kitchen, to learn how to cook a modern French-Kiwi gourmet meal from recipes he has created. Arno loves to teach and your cooking class will last about 2 hours. You will learn to cook or simply watch while your host prepares your dishes. Please let Arno know in advance if you prefer a hands-on cooking class or demonstration as you relax and watch Arno create your meal. Arno enjoys serving homemade artisan food and wine and he has developed a series of menus available online and and in restaurants for everyone to try. In addition to being a professional chef and teacher, he enjoys hosting and sharing stories about food and life!

Market visit: (1-5 guests) Meet Arno at his home and depending on the day, walk or take a bus together to one of the local markets. If it’s a Saturday morning, you will walk just two minutes to the local Britomart market. This is a small outdoor open market with fresh produce, fruits, vegetables, flowers and street food on display. There are a couple of cafes and bars nearby as well as a grassy knoll upon which you can enjoy some snacks. Walk together a further 10 minutes to get to the water, where you enjoy food and fruit while observing the boats and seagulls. On other days, Arno may take you to either the Parnell or Ponsonby market which are a 15min bus ride. Depending on the season and produce availability, you will purchase a few ingredients from Arno's favored vendors that you will use in your cooking class. The market tour lasts about an hour.
