Meet Shirly

Shirly is a passionate teacher and a food enthusiast. She loves cooking, eating good food, traveling, learning new things and meeting new people. Shirly has a degree in Social Communication and she is also a professor. She has now decided to combine her love for teaching and cooking, by making her kitchen the classroom! Ever since Shirly was a little girl, she loved watching her family cook around her, and most of the recipes she uses today are ones she learned from her parents and grandma.

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

In-home meal: (1-5 guests) Shirly lives in Caballito, a residential neighborhood in the center of Buenos Aires. Be welcomed into her home with a lovely balcony with a view, beautifully decorated with books, a piano, violin, guitar and photos from her travels. You can expect to enjoy traditional Argentinian dishes that Shirly grew up eating. This is a small group, non-private experience. She will welcome you with a traditional hot beverage called mate and alfajores (dulce de leche sandwich cookies). Start your meal with a traditional picada (salami and cheese platter), followed by a meal of corn and meat empanadas. End your meal with dulce de leche pancakes for dessert.

Cooking experience: (1-5 guests) Shirly has a small kitchen, but it is very well equipped with all the latest equipment to cook a delicious meal! In your 4-hour hands-on cooking class learn to make two types of empanadas and a dessert. Shirly will teach you how to make meat and corn empanadas from scratch. Learn to make the dough, then the filling and, lastly, learn how to shape them. While the empanadas are cooking, learn to make pancakes with dulce de leche. After you cooking class, sit around the table to enjoy the meal that is the fruit of your labor, paired with Argentinian red wine, while chatting with your host and other guests.

Market visit: (1-5 guests) Shirly will take you to visit El Progreso Market. This is one of the most historic food markets in Buenos Aires, founded in 1889. You will see a large number of stalls selling fresh meat, vegetables, fish and dairy products. Walk around this bustling market with Shirly and learn more about local ingredients and how they are used in typical Argentinian cooking. Then buy fresh and organic ingredients for your cooking class and meal. After that, you’ll make a brief stop in the English District to contemplate its architecture, before arriving at Shirly's apartment for your cooking experience and meal.

Notes: This is a small group, non-private experience. Please note that the group size will not exceed 5 people. Please indicate at the time of booking if you have any dietary restrictions. Alcohol (Malbec red wine) is included in the price of the experience.

The experience with Shirly was very satisfying and enjoyable. From the first moment itself, Shirly was kind and received us with a nice smile. We talked a lot about her experience and why she decided to start cooking for tourists. The apartment was comfortable and with good interiors. She receives us with mate and alfajores (a typical argentine’s sweet), then we started to cook. We learned how to prepare empanadas, with the dough and all the ingredients and the “repulgue” - this was absolutely our favorite part! Also, we enjoyed a nice Picada with ham, cheese and sausage and Malbec Wine. But, the panqueques with dulce de leche was our most favorite thing we ate. Travelers will definitely learn about Argentina’s traditions and food rituals, by taking an experience with Shirly!

Wonderful Empanada cooking class. Great class with Shir! I met her at coffee shop, walked to market. She told us some history and lots of info about the market and food stalls. Purchased a few items, walked to her apartment and she had prepared ( premeasured flour into bowls) ingredients to make the pastry. Along with a booklet for the recipe. ( both metric and imperial measurements available). Our group of 5 learned about Matte and experienced that ritual of preparation and drinking the tea on her lovely balcony. Shir was very informative and wanted to share the culture, so open to questions! Made the dough, fillings, everyone able to participate. Also made pancake to be filled with dulce de leche for dessert. She served wine and a tray of meat and cheese while we needed to wait for fillings to cool before we could make the empanada. Shir’s instructions were great! I even learned how to flip a pancake in a pan- it’s all in the wrist. Wonderful day, great company, met some lovely people. I highly recommend this class.
