Meet Dewa

Dewa, a gardener at the neighboring resort, lives with his wife, Jero, and their children and extended family in the artist village of Keliki in the elegant terraced foothills 20 minutes north of Ubud. Dewa is a wealth of knowledge about local customs, cuisine and agriculture and loves to share his culture with guests.

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

In-home meal: (8-24 guests) In the heart of Ubud, Bali you can experience an authentic in-home meal that offers a true taste of Balinese culture through its flavors. Hosted in Dewa's home, your home-cooked Balinese meal may includes a variety of traditional dishes such as pepes ikan (grilled tuna in banana leaves), a delicate and deeply satisfying dish, bumbu kuning (chicken in a fresh turmeric and coconut milk sauce), bregedel (corn fritters), and jukut urab (seasonal vegetables with grated coconut and fried shallots). Each dish is prepared with fresh, locally sourced ingredients, a unique opportunity to savor an authentic Balinese meal while connecting with the warmth and hospitality of the local culture.

In traditional Balinese style, you will not eat your meal with Dewa and his family, although they will be with you throughout the rest of the experience. In keeping with their Balinese family tradition and sense of spirituality, your hosts will not share the meal with you at the dining table. Their preferred approach is to eat on one's own and focus on personal meditation to achieve a positive state of mind.

Cooking experience: (2-24 guests) Experience an authentic and immersive Balinese cooking class in Ubud with locals that will deepen your connection to Balinese culture and cuisine. Begin your culinary adventure in Ubud by exploring exotic fruits, herbs, and spices near Dewa’s home, where you’ll learn about the medicinal properties and cultivation of local ingredients like galangal, cinnamon, cloves, vanilla, cacao, and nutmeg. After a short 10-minute walk to Dewa’s family compound, enjoy a tour of the home before diving into your cooking class. In your Ubud cooking class you'll have the opportunity to cook traditional Balinese dishes using a wood-fired stove, preparing ingredients by grinding spices and chilies on a stone grinder, chopping fresh produce, and wrapping fish in banana leaves. This hands-on, communal cooking experience offers a unique and engaging way to discover the flavors and techniques of Balinese cuisine.

This immersive Balinese cooking class is perfect for travelers who want to learn about traditional Balinese cooking techniques, explore exotic spices, and connect with local culture in a meaningful way. Whether you're a seasoned cook or a beginner, this class offers a fun, educational experience for all skill levels and families with children as well.

Notes: On days when Dewa is unavailable, an equally wonderful family member will host you with Dewa's wife Jero.

Dewa can provide round-trip transportation only from Ubud hotels. If you are staying outside Ubud, there is no transportation and Dewa will meet you directly at his home in Keliki. Dewa can offer a vegetarian meal on request, if informed in advance.

We had an unforgettable experience at the cooking class with Dewa. Not only did we learn a lot about Balinese cooking, but we also gained fascinating insights into Balinese culture. During a walk through the village, we saw cinnamon, cacao, and taro plants, which made the experience even more special. At Dewa’s home, we immediately felt welcomed by him and his family, and the delicious food we prepared together was the highlight of a truly wonderful evening. Thank you, Dewa, for giving us such an authentic glimpse into your life in Bali!

This was so much more than a cooking class, it was a rich cultural experience. We learned so much about Balinese culture, traditions, farming and village life from Dewa. My husband said it was one of the most meaningful tours we have ever done (in the 48 countries we have visited). Can't recommend this enough!
