Meet Shilpa

Shilpa is a food consultant and runs a takeaway service from home called Gourmet Greens and Beans. She lives centrally, in the heart of Mumbai city, with her husband Deepak, son Sharang and daughter Diya, who already dreams of becoming a pastry chef just like her mother. Shilpa is originally from Ludhiana in the north of India and calls herself a hard-core Punjabi who loves to eat and make merry. She is excited to tell you all about the food, culture and lifestyle of the people living in different parts of Punjab.

Shilpa loves the food from her home region so much that she returns just to eat her favorite dishes and to source special regional ingredients like hing (a spice called asafoetida), kasoori methi (dried fenugreek leaves), makki atta (corn flour) and mustard oil from Punjab.

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

In-home meal: (1-20 guests) Shilpa will give you the lowdown on Punjabi food and culture while you sip on a welcome drink. Later when you sit down to share a meal she will explain to you how each dish is paired to bring out its unique taste and flavor. Some dishes that you might enjoy include yellow dal tadka (lentils), achari aloo (potatoes in cooked with tangy spices), paneer makhani (fresh cheese cooked in a creamy, tomato sauce) and roti or lachha paratha (flatbread).

Cooking experience: (1-20 guests) In your Mumbai cooking class learn to cook 2-3 vegetarian Punjabi dishes. Join Shilpa in her home kitchen and learn to make roti or paratha (flatbread), paneer makhni (fresh cheese in a creamy tomato sauce) and dal (lentils). While you chop, stir and fry, Shilpa shares insights on Indian spices, ingredients, and cooking techniques. After cooking, sit down to share the dishes you helped prepare with Shilpa at her dining table.

Market visit: (1-10 guests) Meet Shilpa at her home and drive in her car to a neighborhood grocery store. Here you will be introduced to local fruits, vegetables, spices and grains. Shilpa introduces you to local and regional ingredients and shares how they are used in Indian cooking. You might buy a few ingredients for your meal and return to Shilpa's home for your cooking class - where you will learn to cook an Indian vegetarian meal. Your market tour will last for 30 minutes.

Please note that this is not your traditional market tour at an open market; this market tour is of a covered grocery store where Mumbai locals shop for produce on a daily basis.

Notes:
1. Shilpa offers only vegetarian food and can also do a complete vegan Indian meal.
2. In addition to a traditional Punjabi meal, she can also whip up other cuisines from North India. Please be sure to tell her your preference at the time of booking your Mumbai cooking class.
3. She is also flexible with her start time, so if you wish to start early or late, please inform her in advance via WhatsApp.

We had a truly wonderful experience with Mrs. Guptka’s vegan cooking class and would absolutely give it 5 stars. As a couple currently traveling and consciously seeking more spirituality and health in our lives, this experience felt especially meaningful to us. Mrs. Guptka is incredibly lively, energetic, and full of warmth. From the very beginning, she made us feel genuinely welcome and created a joyful and open atmosphere. Her passion for cooking is deeply inspiring, and it is very clear that organic vegetarian and vegan food is not just a lifestyle for her, but a true philosophy she lives by. This added a beautiful depth to the whole experience. We especially appreciated how much she shared beyond the cooking itself – recipes, access to a WhatsApp group, and YouTube recommendations, so we can continue this journey at home. We prepared five different dishes together and then enjoyed them – everything was absolutely delicious! This was much more than just a cooking class for us; it was an enriching and inspiring experience that aligns perfectly with our path. Highly recommended!

Shilpa welcomed my colleagues and I into her lovely apartment and gave us a whirlwind tour of a beautiful vegan meal. We all took turns contributing to three dishes and roti from scratch. She was generous with her knowledge and exceptionally efficient. I’d highly recommend this experience to anyone, and especially those who are interested in learning more about a plant based diet.

I had a lovely morning in Shilpa’s kitchen as we chopped, stirred, in seasoned. Shilpa’s warm approach made me feel at home right away. We had fun getting to know each other as we prepared a delicious meal. I left with new ideas, recipes, and a full belly. I’m grateful for Shilpa’s hospitality and her willingness to share a bit of her vast knowledge of Indian cuisine.
