Meet Koji

Koji and his wife Kaori live in a modern home in a quiet neighborhood just north of Kyoto’s city center. The husband and wife duo learned to cook from their respective parents and share a deep appreciation for Japanese culture and history. Koji is especially interested in architecture and Kaori loves learning about cooking and the health benefits of food. They are excited to share some of their favorite dishes with travelers while also practicing their English skills!

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

In-home meal: (1-3 guests) Your experience will start with a warm welcome in Koji and Kaori’s immaculate home, located a few minutes’ walk from the nearby subway station. Your meal will include traditional dishes like the famous okonomiyaki, a cabbage pancake filled with seafood, vegetables and topped with a savory sauce. Side dishes such as dashmaki tamago (rolled egg omelette) or yudofu (tofu hot pot) and fresh salad will also fill the table. And of course, no meal is complete without miso soup! One of Kaori and Koji’s favorite Japanese dishes, they love how this soup connects people - not just around the table - but to centuries of Japanese culinary and cultural tradition.

Cooking experience: (1-3 guests) After settling in, you will learn to make okonomiyaki, a fun dish to prepare with a group. Together you will mix the batter, chop the filling, and grill these tasty, savory pancakes. You'll eat the okonomiyaki along with other dishes that were prepared in advance.

Notes: Many Japanese households request that you leave your shoes at the door.

Koji and Kaori are only available to host on weekends and national holidays due to their work schedules.

Nic and I both really enjoyed our time with Koji and Kaori. They are very warm people, and excited to be part of Traveling Spoon. We really enjoyed the conversation between meal preparation; each sharing information about our customs and traditions, occasionally referencing Google translate and Google images and lots of laughs. They were a delight to be around, and it makes me so happy to see fellow travelers want to be part of this type of a cultural exchange. - Mary, Traveling Spoon Ambassador

I had a great time with Kaori and Koji, they are wonderful hosts. I learned how to prepare Miso soup and Okonomiyaki, and it tasted wonderful. We had a long and very interesting conversation mostly about Japanese culture and differences to European culture. I'm very grateful I had the chance to meet a Japanese family at home and spend such a nice time with them. It was definitely one of the highlights in Kyoto. Arigatô gozaimasu! - Wolfgang
