Meet Nayna

As a child, Nayna was always shooed out of her grandmother's kitchen for her habit of snacking on ingredients. She took up cooking a little later in life, not for want of trying. This led to a long running love affair in and out of professional and home kitchens. Nayna grew up surrounded by great home cooking by the female members of her family who were from the North (Camiling) and South (Batangas) of the Philippines. She is an avid traveler and adventurous eater. These things influence her cooking greatly, and she is always cooking up something new. Everything Nayna serves is made from scratch, down to the condiments and relishes that you will be tasting. Professionally, Nayna is a freelance food and travel writer, and is always on the go but when she's home, she enjoys preparing feasts for her loved ones and friends. Come join her at the table, and be ready to hear and share stories together.

What to expect

In-home meal: (1-3 guests) You will be welcomed at the door to Nayna and Kristine's small loft apartment lined with shelves of books, spices and condiments. Enjoy a homemade lemongrass and calamansi drink as you chat with Nayna and learn about traditional Filipino recipes distinguished by their robust and rich meat flavors and succulent seafood. Your menu might include dishes such as adobo (pork or chicken marinated in a garlic and vinegar), ginataang hipon sa taba ng talangka (shrimp or crab cooked in crab fat and coconut milk), ensaladang talong (smoky eggplant with salted duck egg), burong mangga (spicy beer pickled mangoes) followed by turon (crispy fried bananas) with salted caramel for dessert. Menu varies based on seasonality and Nayna's travel influences. She is also open to creating a menu that caters to pescatarian and vegetarian preferences.

Cooking experience: (1-3 guests) Join Nayna in the kitchen to learn how to prepare a traditional Filipino meal. Nayna will teach you to prepare 2-3 dishes which will be served with other dishes that have been prepared in advance.

Market visit: (1-3 guests) Meet early to explore the weekly fresh market with Nayna. She will teach you about seasonal Filipino produce and explain how it is used in home kitchens around the country. You might pick up a few items for your cooking lesson before returning home to prepare lunch.
Note: Nayna's market visit is only available on Sundays starting at 7:30am.

Notes: You may be joined by Nayna's partner Kristine when she is in town. Kristine is a travel magazine editor who concocts delicious drinks!
