Cooking experience: (2-8 guests) Meet Michiko at her cooking studio, just a 5-minute walk from Ikegami Station, for a small-group Japanese cooking class in Tokyo centered around one of Japan's favorite comfort foods: katsudon. During your 2.5-hour hands-on cooking class, learn to prepare katsudon, a popular Japanese rice bowl topped with a crispy pork cutlet, egg and savory-sweet sauce. A staple of Japanese home cooking, katsudon is also a dish international travelers may recognize from Japanese anime and popular culture. Michiko will guide you step-by-step as you prepare your katsudon along with classic accompaniments, including homemade miso soup and goma-ae, a traditional spinach dish dressed with sesame. As you cook, learn about Japanese ingredients, everyday cooking techniques and the role these dishes play in Japanese food culture. After cooking, sit down together to enjoy the Japanese meal you prepared. For anime fans, food lovers and travelers looking for unique things to do in Tokyo, this small-group cooking class offers a fun and delicious way to experience authentic Japanese home cooking with a local. Please note that, unlike most Traveling Spoon experiences, this is a small-group experience and is not private.

If you like cooking, and enjoy Japanese food this is an excellent opportunity to learn simple home-style Japanese cooking, with ingredients that are available in most large U.S. cities. The food was delicious and our host was friendly and engaging. The interpreter did a nice job too. Having the session in an average Tokyo outer suburban home makes it even more interesting as few westerners will have that experience.- David B March 01, 2024
