Meet JJ

JJ first learned to cook from her grandmother who prepared family-style Hokkien food on a daily basis. She has worked in the food manufacturing industry for the last 15 years and is proficient in spices and flavorings. Being a "foodologist" she believes that each ingredient should be respected for its history, character and purpose in a dish. JJ is a passionate believer in the importance of shared meals to bring families together and hopes to share her love of simple, satisfying meals with guests at her table. She will share with you the stories behind the dishes she serves as well as detailed information about her favorite local ingredients and cooking styles.

JJ lives in Woodlands, a suburb near the Singapore-Malaysia border crossing. She lives in an HBD apartment with her young daughter and parents, who might be present during your experience. They don't speak English but they love meeting guests! Be sure to ask JJ to show you her little herb garden where she tends several varieties of of basil, coriander, and pandan leaves.

What to expect

In-home meal: (1-4 guests) Join JJ for a meal at her welcoming dining table in her small but comfortable apartment. She prepares authentic Chinese-Singaporean dishes, as well as the occasional fusion dish. Singaporean Chinese cooking varies from community to community and JJ can prepare dishes in several styles, including Hokkien, Cantonese, Hakka, and Teochew preparations.

For health reasons related to her work she keeps a vegan diet during daily life, although this does not restrict her culinary exploration of non-vegan ingredients. JJ's goal is to showcase simple, lesser-known homestyle dishes that most travelers to Singapore don't have the opportunity to sample in the commercial food scene as they are more commonly found in home kitchens.

You might get to sample JJ's green mustard rice, braised pork trotters in soy sauce, and her green mustard pancake. One of her favorite dishes is preserved radish omelet because it reminds her of her late grandmother and many fond memories from her childhood.

Cooking experience: (1-2 guests) Join JJ in her compact yet efficient kitchen to learn to prepare 2-3 Chinese-Singaporean dishes. In your hands-on lesson you will help chop ingredients and stir-fry them to perfection as JJ shares her secrets to create simple, flavorful dishes.

Market visit: (1-2 guests) Meet JJ at her home and then ride together to the neighborhood market, Marsiling Wet Market in Woodlands. You will spend about 1-1.5 hours at the market, learning about the regional produce on offer and the local market scene.

After picking up a few ingredients for your cooking lesson you will return to her apartment to get started on your culinary journey in the kitchen.

Notes: JJ is only available on weekends.

Traveler reviews

It was our first time with Traveling Spoon and it will surely not the last one. We had a great experience! JJ was an incredible host, very humble and providing us with insight on the food and the food experience with attention to nutritional values. This experience has been a great way to meet new people and discover new culinary frontiers. - Vito

JJ is extremely friendly and she lovingly welcomed me into her home. She has a nice little herb garden just outside where she grows things like fresh Thai basil, lime leaf, coriander etc. I have never met a Chinese Foodologist before, so I knew immediately I would be in for a treat. Her willingness to educate and share the stories behind the simple ingredients she uses in her dishes, adds so much more to the entire culinary experience. Her passion for food is evident and she offered so many wonderful examples of how to use leftovers, and not waste food. The green mustard rice and the braised pork were delicious, with so many layers of flavor packed in them. A great deal of love and thought goes into JJ’s cooking and it was a delight to learn how to cook Hokkien food. - Christa, Traveling Spoon Ambassador
