Meet Alda

Alda is a university student studying psychology. She loves spending time in the kitchen with her family and learned to cook from her father and grandmother, who owned a bakery in Mexico City. Alda lives in a modern house designed by her father in the contemporary Mexican style of the eighties. Alda and her parents share this beautiful home located amongst colorful colonial houses in the lively, tree-lined neighborhood of Coyoacan in the south of the city. "I saw my Dad cooking when I was younger and I really enjoyed it - it's a way to distract my mind and I find it soothing." Alda loves introducing her guests to Mexican cuisine. Her friend Ricardo is a history buff and will host with her when his schedule allows.

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

In-home meal: (1-5 guests) You will be greeted by Alda and her parents (when they're in town) before joining them at their dining table for a meal of Mexican dishes from the central highlands, which feature ingredients including corn, mushrooms, avocado, peppers, beans, and fresh herbs. You might enjoy dishes such as chilaquiles, lightly-fried corn tortillas topped with meat and cheese, molletes, toasted bread with a traditional spread, or a variety of marinated and grilled meats such as arrachers and cecina. You will end your meal with a typical homemade Mexican dessert such as tropical fruit blended with sweetened-condensed milk or smashed zapote and orange juice eaten with a spoon.

Please note that locals in Mexico City eat a late lunch around 3pm. If you'd like to eat lunch earlier, Alda can accommodate your timings.

Cooking experience: (1-5 guests) Join Alda in the kitchen to prepare a few simple dishes such as chilaquiles or corn quesadillas with a variety of traditional fillings such as mushrooms, peppers, nopales (cactus), huitlacoche (corn fungus), and flor de calabaza (squash flowers). These dishes are typically served with beans or a tomato and chickpea-rice for sides. You can expect to learn to cook 2-3 dishes. The cooking portion of your experience will last approximately 90 minutes.

Market visit: (1-5 guests) Only offered in the morning when the markets are open and lively, Alda will take you to her neighborhood's market, a 5 minute drive away, to help you discover regional produce. The market is in a building with stands and stalls filled with local fruits and vegetables. The market visit lasts an hour. If you happen to book the tour on a Saturday, Alda will take you to the local tianguis (street market). Tianguis have been important in Mexican trade and culinary traditions since before the Spaniards arrived. Each neighborhood has it's own tianguis, which operates one or two days per week. Her neighborhood tianguis is not touristy and visiting with Alda is a very local experience that provides a good insight into the area's culture.
