Meet Marie-Anne

Marie-Anne is a warm and delightful host, a proud grandmother of four grandchildren, and a wonderful cook who lives in Leuven, a charming University town close to Brussels. She grew up in Flounders and learned to cook from her mother and grandmother who were both excellent cooks. She still has fond memories of picking vegetables directly from their garden and cooking them in the cosy kitchen with her family. Marie-Anne remembers how her mother made everything from scratch including bread, jams and preserved vegetables for the winter. Marie-Anne offers dishes that are made from family recipes passed down through generations. Marie-Anne loves to eat and sit at the table with friends and family over home cooked food. She is passionate about cooking using fresh and seasonal ingredients. She hosts along with her husband Frank when he is in town during dinner experiences at their welcoming home that has a beautiful garden in the back. Marie-Anne works as a medical administrator at the largest hospital in Belgium while her husband works in the dental industry. Learn about Belgian food and culture from this wonderful couple in Leuven, a historical university town, located a 15-min train ride from Brussels, famous for its breweries.

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

In-home meal: (1-6 guests) Join Marie-Anne and have a welcome drink in her garden before joining her at her dining table for a traditional Belgian meal garnished with herbs freshly picked from the garden. Marie-Anne likes to cook dishes like her grandmother's vol-au-vent. To make it, she roasts a whole chicken, stews the chicken in chicken broth with carrots, onions and bay leaf for two hours and refrigerates a broth-submerged chicken for 24 hours. The next day she prepares a roux and adds mushrooms, sausages and the flavor infused chicken to make this soulful dish. This is the way her grandmother used to make it and she still makes it the same way to this day. Back in the day, everyone used to have chickens and for families with many children, bird's nest was the classic peasant dish that was made. You may get to try Marie-Anne's vogelnestje, bird's nest prepared with a secret ingredient or the traditional grizje garnalen, shrimp from the North sea served in a tomato with salad. A meal with Marie-Anne always includes a potato dish like traditional homemade fries or croquettes. Your meal will conclude with a sweet dessert made from Belgian chocolate like mousse au chocolat, moelleux van chocolade or chocolate cake.

Cooking experience: (1-4 guests) Join Marie-Anne in her kitchen and learn to cook three Belgian family favorites such as witloof (Belgium endive cooked in a creamy ham and cheese sauce) and vogelnestje (Flemish version of scotch eggs - mincemeat encased hardboiled egg) in addition to Belgian frietjes (homemade potato fries). Most Belgian homes have a deep fryer and Marie-Anne will show you how to make some of the tastiest fries we've ever tasted. Cooking is a relaxing activity for Marie-Anne and she enjoys slow cooking so expect your class to take about two hours. Please note that for some of the classic Belgian dishes that take days to cook, Marie-Anne will prepare a few of the ingredients in advance to save time.

Market visit: (1-4 guests) Meet Marie-Anne at her home and drive to the Heverlee market on Sundays and watch as she buys ingredients for your cooking class. Enjoy the market in a small town and return with a basket of produce. Please NOTE that the market tour is only offered on Sunday mornings starting at 9am.

Notes: Marie-Anne also makes excellent Italian food so if you are interested in learning to make pasta from scratch and other Italian dishes, let her know when making your booking request and she will plan an Italian menu. Please note that this house has two dogs.

There is a section in the booking form to note any allergies or dietary restrictions which will be sent directly to your host.

Once you request a booking you can message your host directly to ask any specific questions. Your messages will be emailed directly to the host and any responses will be forwarded to your email and can also be seen on the Traveling Spoon website.

Your card will not be charged until your host accepts your booking. Typically hosts respond to bookings within 72 hours. In the event your host is unavailable on your selected date and your host rejects your booking your credit card will not be charged.

Your host's detailed contact information, including their phone number, address, and direction notes, will all be provided immediately upon successful confirmation of your experience (after your hosts accepts your booking and your credit card is successfully processed). This information will be emailed to you to the email address you used to sign up, and will also be visible on your Traveling Spoon profile.

All prices are noted as per person prices unless otherwise specified (typically transportation is charged on a per car basis, but otherwise all prices are per person).

Some hosts offer alcohol as an optional add-on for travelers who are of legal drinking age. Pricing for alcohol is visible on the host profile page and includes one to two glasses of wine, beer or local alcohol.
