Meet Debbie

Meet Debbie, a passionate educator and home cook who takes pride in sharing the rich flavors of her home. She prepares traditional Balinese dishes alongside Manadonese recipes from her husband’s home island of Sulawesi, offering guests a deeper taste of Indonesia’s diverse culinary heritage. For Debbie, cooking is deeply personal - “cooking for my family is a way for me to express my love.” Debbie welcomes guests into her family’s large compound, which is also home to a school dedicated to supporting disadvantaged and differently abled young people in the community. Through year-long programs, students learn valuable skills such as cooking, graphic design, and hospitality. During your experience, Debbie’s cooking students may assist in preparing parts of the meal, adding a meaningful and collaborative element to your time together. On days when Debbie is unavailable, her head staff member Agatha, who is experienced in leading cooking classes, may host your experience.

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

Cooking experience: (1-9 guests) Join Debbie or her experienced team member Agatha for a hands-on cooking class in Denpasar, where you’ll learn to prepare an authentic Indonesian meal in her cooking studio. This immersive Bali cooking experience may also include working alongside Debbie’s students, adding a meaningful and cultural dimension to your time together. During your Denpasar cooking class, you’ll learn to cook a variety of traditional Indonesian dishes from different regions of the country including Balinese and Manadonese cuisine. Your menu may include fish satay, nasi goreng (Indonesia’s beloved fried rice), bregedel (crispy corn fritters), lightly battered shrimp, fresh tropical salads, and seasonal fruits. End your meal with traditional Balinese sweets for dessert. This authentic cooking class in Denpasar offers a unique opportunity to explore Indonesia’s diverse culinary heritage while connecting with local culture through food, people, and shared stories.

Market visit: (2-9 guests) Join your host for a guided market tour of Pasar Badung market, one of the largest traditional markets in Bali. During this Denpasar market tour, you’ll explore a vibrant local market filled with fresh, seasonal ingredients used in everyday Indonesian cooking. As you walk through the bustling stalls, Debbie or Agatha will introduce you to a variety of local produce, herbs, and spices that define Balinese cuisine. Learn how to select the ripest fruits, understand the ingredients used in traditional dishes, and meet some of your host's favorite vendors. This Denpasar market tour offers a deeper connection to local food culture and provides insight into how Indonesians shop, cook, and eat at home. I had a wonderful dinner with Debbie and her friend Meyliana. We had a selection of different traditional Balinese and Indonesian dishes. The company was also excellent. Debbie and Meyliana run a small school and it was really interesting to listen to all their stories. I would certainly recommend Travelling Spoon and Debbie Huang to all.
