Meet Putu

Putu is a talented Balinese home cook with a wonderful sense of humor who welcomes travelers into her traditional family compound in Ubud for an authentic Balinese cooking and cultural experience. Raised in a family of rice farmers, Putu learned to cook alongside her grandmother, helping prepare traditional Balinese meals from an early age. Today, she combines generations-old family recipes with her creativity and passion for beautiful food presentation, often decorating dishes with intricately carved fruits and vegetables. Beyond cooking, Putu plays an important role in her family's spiritual traditions, preparing elaborate fruit offerings for Balinese Hindu temple ceremonies. She also makes homemade jamu, a traditional Indonesian turmeric-based herbal drink. Putu lives with her husband, Pasta, their three children, and her grandparents in a lively family compound surrounded by tropical fruit trees, including jackfruit, cacao, durian, coffee, and bananas. The family also raises pigs, ducks, chickens, and a cow. During your visit, Putu and her family will show you around their home, orchard, and family temple, sharing insights into everyday Balinese life, farming, and religious traditions. You'll enjoy a delicious home-cooked Balinese meal featuring fresh ingredients and rice grown by her grandparents. More than a cooking class in Ubud, an experience with Putu offers a meaningful opportunity to connect with a local Balinese family and discover the island's food, culture, and traditions firsthand.

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

Cooking experience: (2-30 guests) Join Putu in her traditional family compound in Ubud for a private, hands-on Balinese cooking class where you'll prepare five authentic Balinese dishes using family recipes passed down through generations. Learn to chop, grind spices, and grill as Putu introduces you to traditional cooking techniques, fragrant local ingredients, and their cultural and medicinal significance. Many ingredients come straight from her family's farm, including rice grown by her grandparents. In Putu's simple home kitchen, discover how she creates the rich, complex flavors of Balinese cuisine using just a two-burner cooktop. Along the way, she'll share stories about Balinese Hindu traditions and everyday village life, bringing warmth and humor to this intimate cultural experience. After approximately 1.5 hours of cooking, sit down together to enjoy the delicious meal you've prepared. When in season, you'll also taste fresh, organic tropical fruits picked from the family's trees. More than a typical Ubud cooking class, this authentic farm-to-table experience offers a personal connection to Balinese food, family, and culture.

Market visit: (1-30 guests) After a 7am pickup from your Ubud hotel, join Putu for a guided visit to Pejeng's bustling traditional Balinese market. Experience everyday local life as you explore colorful stalls filled with fresh tropical fruits, seasonal vegetables, aromatic spices, and traditional Balinese ingredients. Putu will introduce you to local vendors, explain the ingredients used in Balinese cuisine, and help you select fresh produce for your cooking class. Spend approximately 30 minutes exploring the market, taking in the vibrant sights, sounds, and aromas of a traditional Balinese morning market. Be sure to bring your camera! After your market tour, continue to Putu's family home for your private, hands-on Balinese cooking class.

Putu's home is in a lovely, quiet setting. When I arrived the table was set, the food prepped for cooking, and the children greeted me with shy looks and an occasional smile. Putu she explained the what, how, why of the cooking process. It amazed me that she could prepare 6 dishes on two burners with great fluidity to her work. Each dish turned out perfectly and looks beautiful - not to mention, everything was delicious!

Putu arranged for her family to pick us up from the hotel. The journey out to her home was lovely and gives you a view of the country side and how rurul life is in Ubud. Putu and her sister made the whole e perience very enjoyable and there was so much food just for us. We made 5 dishes which were amazing and so tasty. Putu is incredibly conscious of hygiene and made us handwash before starting, aprons and any dropped food was discarded. Fresh coconut on arrival was a treat and refreshing. FAQ

You can cancel your reservation up until 48 hours before your experience for a full refund minus a 4% processing fee. Experiences within 48 hours are not refundable.

If you have a question for your host, you can include a note in the field "Write a note to your host" during the booking process. Once your booking is confirmed, you will be emailed your host's direct contact information and you will also be able to message the host through your profile. You can always cancel your booking and receive a full refund 48 hours or more before your experience. If you have other questions you can also email us at reservations@travelingspoon.com.

Most of our hosts are able to accommodate dietary restrictions and allergies, including vegetarian and gluten free options. For vegetarian travelers, we have an icon on each host profile to indicate whether that host can also offer a fully vegetarian menu. There is a section in the booking form to note any allergies or dietary restrictions which will be sent directly to your host.

Some hosts offer alcohol as an optional add-on for travelers who are of legal drinking age. Pricing for alcohol is visible on the host profile page and includes one to two glasses of wine, beer or local alcohol.

Have a flight or other tour planned and can't make the timing provided? If the timing listed on the host's profile doesn't work for you, our hosts can often accommodate timing changes. Because all of our experiences are private our hosts are happy to tailor experiences to meet your travel needs. Simply note your request in the booking process.

Your card will not be charged until your host accepts your booking. Typically hosts respond to bookings within 72 hours. In the event your host is unavailable on your selected date and your host rejects your booking your credit card will not be charged.

Your host's detailed contact information, including their phone number, address, and direction notes, will all be provided immediately upon successful confirmation of your experience (after your hosts accepts your booking and your credit card is successfully processed). This information will be emailed to you to the email address you used to sign up, and will also be visible on your Traveling Spoon profile.

All prices are noted per person prices unless otherwise specified. Transfers are typically charged on a per car basis, not per person. Children aged 5-11 are 50% off, and infants aged 0-4 are free. Hosts set their own prices and Traveling Spoon marks up the experiences; on average hosts receive over 70% of the price paid by the traveler.

100% of Traveling Spoon experiences are private! Just you and your host and host's family.

Hosts typically respond to booking inquiries within 72 hours. If for some reason you have not heard from your host or if you have any questions you can always contact us at reservations@travelingspoon.com.

Your safety and security are our top priority. To ensure this, Traveling Spoon personally vets 100% of all hosts, including an in-person host visit, to ensure each host and experience meets our strict quality requirements.

Some hosts offer round-trip transfers as an optional add-on. A driver collects you from your hotel or residence, takes you to the experience, and brings you back at the end. Pricing is quoted per car, not per person, so a group shares one fare. Your host's exact pickup instructions come with your confirmation details once the booking is accepted. A few hosts arrange transfers differently — a one-way ride, or a pickup from a central meeting point — and where that is the case their profile says so in place of the round-trip wording.

Many of our hosts accommodate solo travelers. You can see if a host accepts solo travelers by looking at the traveler range found next to the experience descriptions on the host profile (indicated by the numbers in parentheses next to "In-home meal", "Cooking experience" and "Market visit").

Most of our Traveling Spoon experiences are incredibly family friendly and can accommodate infants and children. If a host is unable to accommodate children that will be noted in the "Notes" section of their profile. Our child pricing policy is children aged 5-11 are 50% off, and infants aged 0-4 are free.
