Meet Shveta

Shveta, a former primary school teacher who runs a homestay in a suburb of Jaipur, learned how to cook from her mother. Her husband, Kul, now retired, used to heads an oil company. World travelers, they are an ideal couple with Shveta cooking and Kul entertaining.

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

In-home meal: (1-15 guests) Your experience starts with Shveta and Kul welcoming you into their contemporary home filled with beautiful sounds of Indian music. After your welcome drink of nimbu pani or jal jeera (a savory drink of mint, lemon, and cumin), join Shveta and Kul at their dining table to enjoy dishes that range from aloo tikki (potato kebab) or pakora (fried vegetables in chickpea batter) to chicken curry, rajma (kidney beans) or chick pea masala, vegetables of the season, dal (lentils), salad, roti (Indian bread), jeera rice (cumin scented rice) and dessert. Dishes cooked may even include organic vegetables Shveta grows on her rooftop.

Cooking experience: (1-12 guests) Learn how to prepare a traditional North Indian meal with Shveta in her kitchen. You will help prepare 3-5 dishes such as aloo gobhi (cauliflower and potatoes), chicken curry, daal and Indian bread before enjoying the meal you helped prepare with Shveta and Kul at their dining table.

Notes: Shveta and Kul operate a homestay out of their house so there may be other guests in the dining room during your experience. While other guests might be present during your meal, your Traveling Spoon cooking experience with Shveta will be private.

Me and my girlfriend had a great experience at Shveta’s home where she thought us how to make northern Indian dishes. Can’t wait to put my new skills at practice. Mostly excited about making Roti!

My boyfriend and I had an awesome time cooking with Shveta! She is such a sweet person who reallt welcomed us in her home. She explained all the recipes at great detail. We prepared pakoras, chicken curry, aloo gobhi, dal, rotis and some kheer together. Everything was delicious!

This was a half day cooking activity including a walk through the local stores to see all types of cooking utensils and the raw ingredients that we would use in our cookery class. Arriving at Shalini’s house we were met by members of her family who would assist her. The space available was small but adequate. Only maximum of 8 person’s fit into her kitchen area in 2 groups of 4.Great fun preparing the vegetables we had just bought in the market. Amazing that we prepared a lovely vegetarian lunch for 8 people and made our own chapatis. Refreshments provided included bottled water, masala tea or black or green tea. Toilet facilities available. Overall a pleasant 4 hour experience.

"I had such a fun evening with Shveta, talking and cooking and eating with her and her nice husband in their lovely home. It was exactly the type of experience I craved after a week of palaces and temples....a visit with local people who are warm, welcoming and great to talk with. Shveta had her recipes all typed up for me and I can't wait to get cooking today after a trip to our Indian grocer, with memories of incredible and delicious India wafting through my house."

Shveta and Kul are absolutely incredible hosts. They are generous, welcoming, gracious and funny! The food is some of the best I had while in India and the experience of eating in their lovely home is like none other. I highly recommend visiting their home for a memorable evening full of laughter, great stories, superb local knowledge and delicious food!
