Meet Hong

Hong is a lovely Hanoian, full of warmth and kindness, not to mention talented cooking skills. Don’t leave Hanoi without trying her delicious spring rolls or delightful salads, whether papaya, banana blossom, or green mango that spring to life with an array of fresh, aromatic, verdant Vietnamese herbs.

Hong does not speak English so she hosts with her daughter Hang, who works at an NGO. Your hosts go out of their way to make you feel comfortable and welcomed in Vietnam. This mother-daughter duo are excited to share the culinary traditions and recipes of Hanoi with you!

What to expect

In-home meal: (2-6 guests) Enjoy a traditional Hanoian meal at Hong's table. Your menu will include home-style dishes such as a seasonal salad, perhaps banana blossom, kohlrabi or papaya depending on what looks best at the market, followed by a main dish of either cha ca (grilled, marinated fish stir-fried with dill and spring onions and eaten with vermicelli) or her excellent spring rolls and fresh herbs. For dessert you will sample a seasonal fresh fruit.

Cooking experience: (1-4 guests) Learn to prepare an authentic Vietnamese salad and either cha ca (grilled fish) or spring rolls from scratch. Please let your host know if you would like to learn to make the fish dish or spring rolls at the time of booking.

Market visit: (2-3 guests) Your experience will begin with a walk through a Hanoian market with your translator, Diem, during which you might try some exotic Vietnamese fruit or other produce. Note that market visits are only available on weekends.

Notes: Start times may vary due to sunset times and will be confirmed in advance by your host.

Hong’s street becomes a walking street after 7:00pm every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. On these days there are often musical performances in the street that last from 7:00-9:00pm and can be seen from her window and balcony.

Traveler reviews

I spent about three weeks traveling through SE Asia and can easily say that my Traveling Spoon experience was the best part of my trip. Our host family in Hanoi was extremely hospitable and friendly. They taught us how to cook three dishes (main course, side vegetable salad, and dessert) and fed us until we were stuffed. I would have eaten more, but I could not physically do it. The fish we made was the best thing I ate on the entire trip. I would use this service again in a second! - Ryan

They could not have been more open and welcoming. The food was great, but the real highlight was learning about Vietnam and Vietnamese culture from a local. - Anonymous

We loved our cooking experience in Hanoi! Our host was gracious and fun. We enjoyed learning to make traditional Vietnamese dishes and are excited to share them with friends and family back in the States! If the opportunity arises, we will definitely work with Traveling Spoon again! - Hailey

Here's the meat and potatoes. As a traveler, it's easy to get caught up in the tourism tornado, ending up going with other travelers to places only travelers go. This service gave me the invaluable experience of going to a part of town I never would have otherwise seen, interacting with people who would never be found in the backpacker's district. A real look into something new. Oh, and the food was downright amazing! Plus we finally got our answers about how to eat certain dishes. - Taylor

Our host and her family were absolutely great and they made us feel at home! Our favorite dish was the Banana blossom salad. We loved it! - Dan
