Meet Angelina

Angelina's interest in cooking was sparked as a teenager as she watched her grandmothers and mother cook in their Greek kitchen. After her studying sociology Angelina worked as a journalist, has published a magazine and taught media in the past. She has traveled around the world and it was during her time living in South Korea in the 90's that she started offering Greek cooking classes. An active food blogger, member of Slow Food International and a member of the Mykonos Gastronomic Club, Angelina is passionate about sharing forgotten Greek and Mykonian recipes featuring locally produced and seasonal ingredients with her guests. One of her passions is discovering traditional island cheeses, small wineries, and microbreweries and she loves sharing her insider knowledge with her guests.

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

In-home meal: (2-8 guests) Enjoy a traditional Greek meal at Angelina's dining table, or outdoors when the weather is good. Angelina focuses on Mykonian produce and seafood caught off the island's shores. Your authentic Greek meal will start with mezze (appetizers) like taramosalata, saganaki (a soft, fried cheese), tzatziki (yoghurt dip), spanakopita (phyllo pastries), gigantes plaki (giant beans in a tomato sauce) followed by a Greek salad, a main dish such as a whole fish, lamb and potatoes, garides saganaki (prawns in fresh tomato sauce with feta cheese), or revithada (a chickpea dish from the island of Sifnos, slow-cooked in a clay pot) or the traditional moussaka perfectly cooked. For dessert, try Angelina's homemade karidopitta (sticky walnut cake) with ice cream or perhaps semolina halva with spices and homemade citrus jelly.

Cooking experience: (2-8 guests) Learn to prepare a traditional Greek and Mykonian meal in Angelina's kitchen. When weather permits you might cook outdoors in a shaded barbecue area. In your hands-on lesson she will teach you to cook 2-3 traditional Greek mezze dishes, like spanakopita or taramosalata. Your meal will also include additional dishes that Angelina will have prepared in advance. You can expect to cook for about an hour before you sit down to share the meal you helped to prepare.

Market visit: (2-8 guests) Explore the local fish and vegetable in the port of Mykonos Town (Hora). Angelina will introduce you to the local produce and products, and explain the specialties items that are produced exclusively on Mykonos. After wandering the market, and perhaps picking up a few items for your meal you will drive to Angelina's beautiful countryside villa with a view of the ocean. The drive takes about 20 minutes.

On days when the market is not at it's peak, Angelina will take you to some of her favorite shops in town. You will visit shops like her favorite cheese and yoghurt producer, the fish monger, a local bakery or a farmer nearby. She can tailor the experience to your interests, so just ask!

Notes: Angelina is only available on Mykonos in the summer months, from June - October, and she has limited availability. Angelina suggests booking transportation with her at an additional cost, as Mykonos roads are tricky and they live in the countryside, making it difficult to reach her. A driver with a car (or mini van if they are many) will pick you up from your hotel or boat and return you safely after the experience, in case you choose to book transportation at an additional cost.

There is a nearby beach and a pool that you are welcome to use during your experience. Just bring your swimsuit and snorkel equipment, a hat and a good appetite!

Traveler reviews

From the moment we were picked up from our hotel in Mykonos, to the moment we were dropped off, the experience was exceptional - she and her husband, Soren, welcomed us with warmth and graciousness into their stunning villa with unobstructed views overlooking the Aegean. Angelina taught us how to make Spanakopita (as per my request). She had all the ingredients perfectly chopped and ready to go. The experience was completely seamless - Angelina is a professional! She explained and demonstrated what to do, while fluttering around the kitchen so gracefully, topping off our glasses of chilled rose, while simultaneously grilling the lamb and the other delicious dishes she had pre-prepared for our lunch. Their home is bright and welcoming. While cooking in the kitchen, the door is open and all you see if the various blues of the sea and sky. The terrace views are incredible and beyond anything I had anticipated when I signed up for this cooking experience. This is truly a high end and high touch experience, and I feel honored to have met Angelina who is very much involved in the culinary scene in Mykonos. She is a wealth of knowledge about the history, culture...and most importantly a food guru :-) Thank you to the Traveling Spoon. I will search for a culinary experience wherever I go. We had the best time!

Dinner with Angelina and her husband in Athens was our third Traveling Spoon experience, and each one has been so special and each seems more interesting than the previous. There were four of us in our party, and as soon as we arrived we felt like we had been invited to old friends for a meal. Everything was naturally Greek, and many had ingredients we cannot get in US nor in fact had heard of before. The whole time while she was cooking her delightful, well travelled husband served us wonderful Greek wine. Angelina is quite well known in Greece, blogs on Greek food, is often on television talking about food, and cooks for many events both in Athens and abroad. Dinner with Angelina was one of the highlights and best memories of our trip to Greece. Thank you Traveling Spoon.

FAQ

You can cancel your experience 48 hours or more before your experience date and receive a full refund. To request a cancellation once you have made a booking simply log in and click the "Request Cancellation" link from the bottom of your booking. Your refund will be processed immediately (note it can take up to 10 business days for this refund to post to your credit card statement). Please note that for cancellations within 48 hours of your experience we unfortunately cannot offer a refund; this is because our hosts typically purchase food and begin their preparations up to 48 hours before the experience.

Most of our hosts are able to accommodate dietary restrictions and allergies, including vegetarian and gluten free options. For vegetarian travelers, we have an icon on each host profile to indicate whether that host can also offer a fully vegetarian menu. There is a section in the booking form to note any allergies or dietary restrictions which will be sent directly to your host.

If you have a question about an experience, create a reservation and include your note in the field "Write a note to your host". Once you request a booking you can continue to message your host directly to ask any specific questions. You can always cancel your booking and receive a full refund as long as you cancel 48 hours in advance.

Your card will not be charged until your host accepts your booking. Typically hosts respond to bookings within 72 hours. In the event your host is unavailable on your selected date and your host rejects your booking your credit card will not be charged.

Your host's detailed contact information, including their phone number, address, and direction notes, will all be provided immediately upon successful confirmation of your experience (after your hosts accepts your booking and your credit card is successfully processed). This information will be emailed to you to the email address you used to sign up, and will also be visible on your Traveling Spoon profile.

All prices are noted per person prices unless otherwise specified. Transportation is typically charged on a per car basis, but otherwise all prices are per person. Children aged 5-11 are 50% off, and infants aged 0-4 are free.

Some hosts offer alcohol as an optional add-on for travelers who are of legal drinking age. Pricing for alcohol is visible on the host profile page and includes one to two glasses of wine, beer or local alcohol.

Some hosts offer transportation as an optional add-on for travelers. Typically this is round trip transportation with pick up and drop off at your hotel. Pricing is quoted per car. Specific instructions for transportation will be provided in your confirmation details when your booking is confirmed.

Many of our hosts accommodate solo travelers. You can see if a host accepts solo travelers by looking at the traveler range found next to the experience descriptions on the host profile (indicated by the numbers in parentheses next to "In-home meal", "Cooking experience" and "Market visit").

Your safety and security are our top priority. To ensure this, Traveling Spoon personally vets 100% of all hosts, including an in-person host visit, to ensure each host and experience meets our strict quality requirements.

Hosts typically respond to booking inquiries within 72 hours. If for some reason you have not heard from your host or if you have any questions you can always contact us at reservations@travelingspoon.com.
