Meet Andrea

Andrea is a trained chef who loves to play with flavors and experiment with Chile’s bounty of fruits, vegetables and seafood. After culinary school she traveled around the world for a year on her own, spending her days taking cooking lessons and exploring restaurants at night. She loves to cook simple, fast dishes that highlight seasonal produce and the incredible variety of fresh seafood available, with her own special twists inspired by her travels.

“There´s nothing I like more than to improvise in the kitchen, and there´s nowhere I feel more focused and inspired. I love simple, I love seasons, I love home cooked and most of all, I love sharing a meal with friends.”

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

In-home meal: (1-6 guests) Enjoy a seasonal, satisfying meal at Andrea's table. She will introduce you to her version of Chilean cuisine using local ingredients in surprising, modern ways. Chilean cuisine traditionally has simple, hearty flavors which Andrea uses as a starting off point. She believes that the richness of Chilean cuisine lies in it's ingredients - the amazingly fresh fruits and vegetables, and the country's long coastline that provides a bounty of fresh seafood. Andrea's cooking brings together these elements in dishes like a warming butternut squash soup with leeks and ginger, fish, fresh baked bread, and desserts like crepes served with manjar, a sweet caramel sauce made from condensed milk, the Chilean version of dulce de leche.

Cooking experience: (1-3 guests) Learn to prepare an inventive, modern Chilean meal alongside Andrea in her kitchen. Together you will work to prepare several dishes that showcase seasonal produce, local Chilean ingredients, and are simple to reproduce at home. You can expect your cooking lesson to last about 2 hours before you sit down to eat.

PERSONALLY VETTED REVIEW
A Traveling Spoon ambassador visited this host. Here is their personal review.

Early on in our conversation, Andrea said that despite all of her career changes and different passions, “I always have to have some element of cooking in my life.” Her love for food and sharing it with others is contagious, and between her expert knowledge and warmth, she makes the perfect host. She’s easygoing, and loves experimenting in the kitchen, balancing the traditions she learned from her grandma with the professional skills she learned in culinary school and working in high class hotel kitchens.
While we cooked, we shared fresh baked bread, mango sours, and stories, and her patience and easygoing nature made for a fun, relaxed experience. She shared many pro tips that I found useful for better cooking in general, along with specific pointers on how to incorporate certain Chilean ingredients into food. The merkén and parmesan bread she made went perfectly with the ginger butternut squash soup we prepared, and the creamy chicken with spinach and bacon was the perfect fall comfort food. For dessert, we made manjar pancakes (more like crepes, but that’s how Chileans make pancakes), which were melt-in- your-mouth delicious, and I left with some great recipes and ideas for my own cooking adventures. For anyone wanting a fusion of traditional Chilean flavors and modern technique and influences, Andrea will be able to guide you flawlessly with fantastic results!

We learned about Chilean cuisine & enjoyed a fabulous time with Andrea, Juan & Mini. I highly recommend this experience. Great meal. Lots of laughs & information as we cooked & learned. We were, also, treated to a personal tour of Mini's gallery.

We had a great time with Andrea, learning about modern Chilean food and culture. She immediately made us feel welcome and it felt more like visiting with a long-time friend, than eating in a stranger's home. The food and drinks were delicious - we enjoyed calafate pisco sours, pebre, pastel de choclo, and suspiro de limeña. We would highly recommend Traveling Spoon, and especially Andrea, if you want a relaxing night with great conversation and food.

Andrea was a wonderful host for our cooking and dinner experience in Santiago. She welcomed us with a traditional Chilean drink, the pisco sour. We had plenty of fresh appetizers, made some delicious bread, and then ate trout with a cream sauce for dinner. We finished the night making crepes with a delicious caramel filling and fruit sauce. Throughout the experience, we learned about the Chilean culture and the city of Santiago. Although we wish we did more cooking during the experience, we had a great time, a delicious meal from start to finish, and learned a lot about Chile!
