Meet Maria Jose

While Maria Jose was traveling the world, the seed of a powerful idea was planted in her mind: to find a way to introduce her fellow travelers to modern Colombia through the country’s culinary richness. Driven by the desire to shake off Colombia’s reputation as a troubled nation and replace it with a new respect for the country’s breathtaking biodiversity, she offers tours at the Paloquemao Market in Bogota to educate guests about local ingredients.

Join Maria Jose for a deep-dive into the exotic world of Colombian fruits and vegetables. She is a passionate advocate for her country’s gastronomy and hopes that through her work she can increase travelers’ understanding of Colombia’s past, present and future. Her goal is to help create local jobs, support good agricultural practices, and help make her country a better place in this new age of peace building.

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

Market visit: (1-7 guests) Meet your host, Maria Jose, at the spectacular Paloquemao Market for an exploration of Colombia’s extensive variety of fruits and vegetables. Maria Jose will lead you through the marketplace and introduce you to more than 15 varieties of exotic fruit. From granadilla, to lulo, to mangostino, to gulupa, you will walk from stall to stall tasting the fruits and fruit juices, while learning about local cooking, agriculture and importance of farmers to the Colombian economy. In addition to sampling fruits, you will also taste savory foods sold at the small stalls in the market. Maria Jose might take you to snack on almojábana (Colombian cheese bread), empanadas, sausages, and other local foods for sale. She will also introduce you to local herbs, tropical flowers, and handicrafts.

This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the different geographical regions in Colombia and the wide variety of foods eaten throughout the country. While you will not sit down to eat an entire meal all at once, you will leave the experience with a full stomach having sampled many different fruits and snacks, and you will have a new appreciation of Colombia’s wide varied gastronomy.

Maria Jose can also help you do a bit of shopping and can assist with bargaining if there is something you might like to buy at the market.

Notes: Your tour of the market and the menu can be customized to your interests and tastes. Just tell Maria Jose if there are certain fruits you would like to try, or if you have a craving for salty over sweet. The market tour is scheduled to begin at 10am, but you can start anytime between 8am-12pm. If you would prefer to start at a different time, feel free to ask when you make your booking.

Maria Jose can offer round-trip transportation only from the following neighborhoods in Bogota: Zona T, Candelaria or Chapinero. If you would like her to pick you up please add transportation to you booking and be sure to tell her where you are staying.

Traveler reviews

Maria Jose Caro was INCREDIBLE. My fruit market tour with Maria Jose Caro was one-of-a-kind, and filled me up both body and soul. More than just a chance to taste more than a dozen fruits, she's worked with chefs to determine the best order to taste them in, as well as developing relationships with the sellers in the market to be responsible in how tours interact with them. It made a huge difference. She's clearly beloved by the people working in the market, and has a variety of pro-social practices built into her business that make you feel good about spending your money with her. (i.e. launching English lessons for the people in the market) The tour came with a strong dose of history and explanation of the culture of Colombia, issues related to the cultivation and consumption of fruit, and even history. Incredibly thorough, informative, and just plain fun to dig into fruit all morning. The highlight of my time in Bogota.

FAQ

You can cancel your experience 48 hours or more before your experience date and receive a full refund. To request a cancellation once you have made a booking simply log in and click the "Request Cancellation" link from the bottom of your booking. Your refund will be processed immediately (note it can take up to 10 business days for this refund to post to your credit card statement). Please note that for cancellations within 48 hours of your experience we unfortunately cannot offer a refund; this is because our hosts typically purchase food and begin their preparations up to 48 hours before the experience.

Most of our hosts are able to accommodate dietary restrictions and allergies, including vegetarian and gluten free options. For vegetarian travelers, we have an icon on each host profile to indicate whether that host can also offer a fully vegetarian menu. There is a section in the booking form to note any allergies or dietary restrictions which will be sent directly to your host.

If you have a question about an experience, create a reservation and include your note in the field "Write a note to your host". Once you request a booking you can continue to message your host directly to ask any specific questions. You can always cancel your booking and receive a full refund as long as you cancel 48 hours in advance.

Your card will not be charged until your host accepts your booking. Typically hosts respond to bookings within 72 hours. In the event your host is unavailable on your selected date and your host rejects your booking your credit card will not be charged.

Your host's detailed contact information, including their phone number, address, and direction notes, will all be provided immediately upon successful confirmation of your experience (after your hosts accepts your booking and your credit card is successfully processed). This information will be emailed to you to the email address you used to sign up, and will also be visible on your Traveling Spoon profile.

All prices are noted as per person prices unless otherwise specified (typically transportation is charged on a per car basis, but otherwise all prices are per person).

Some hosts offer alcohol as an optional add-on for travelers who are of legal drinking age. Pricing for alcohol is visible on the host profile page and includes one to two glasses of wine, beer or local alcohol.

Some hosts offer transportation as an optional add-on for travelers. Typically this is round trip transportation with pick up and drop off at your hotel. Pricing is quoted per car. Specific instructions for transportation will be provided in your confirmation details when your booking is confirmed.

Many of our hosts accommodate solo travelers. You can see if a host accepts solo travelers by looking at the traveler range found next to the experience descriptions on the host profile (indicated by the numbers in parentheses next to "In-home meal", "Cooking experience" and "Market visit").

Your safety and security are our top priority. To ensure this, Traveling Spoon personally vets 100% of all hosts, including an in-person host visit, to ensure each host and experience meets our strict quality requirements.

Hosts typically respond to booking inquiries within 72 hours. If for some reason you have not heard from your host or if you have any questions you can always contact us at reservations@travelingspoon.com.
