John is a passionate home cook who loves celebrating the vibrant, multicultural flavors of his home country, Mauritius. His passion for cooking began at a young age, inspired by his grandmother, who worked as a chef and taught him the importance of flavor, balance, and tradition. John’s unique culinary style reflects the rich diversity of Mauritian cuisine, blending Creole, Indian, Middle Eastern, Chinese, French, and English influences into every dish.
With a Mauritian mother and Chinese father, John’s food tells the story of his heritage and the melting pot of cultures found on the island. After studying in France, he moved to Montreal to continue exploring his love of food and sharing it with others. Cooking with John is more than a meal, it’s a cultural journey through Mauritius’ history and flavors. Together with his wife Monica, John warmly welcomes guests into their home, making every experience feel like dining with old friends.

In-home meal: (1-6 guests) Join your hosts John and Monica in their cozy apartment in Montreal’s Hochelaga neighborhood for a Mauritian-inspired dim sum dining experience. Begin your in-home dining experience in Montreal with a refreshing drink, and a light snack before sitting down to enjoy freshly made dim sums infused with the vibrant, multicultural flavors of Mauritius. John combines his Mauritian and Chinese heritage to create a unique twist on traditional dim sums, featuring ingredients and spices inspired by the island’s diverse cuisine. Choose from a variety of fillings: chicken, pork, shrimp, or vegan and savor an unforgettable meal that blends Asian techniques with Mauritian flair. This intimate Montreal dining experience offers a taste of global fusion in a relaxed local home.
Cooking experience: (1-6 guests) Join your hosts John and Monica in their home kitchen for a hands-on Montreal cooking class, where you’ll learn to cook authentic Mauritian cuisine from scratch. Using recipes passed down from John’s grandmother, you’ll cook for about an hour and create two traditional dishes, such as Mauritian-style dim sum, dumplings, or crispy spring rolls. As you cook, John will share stories and techniques from his multicultural heritage, blending Chinese, Creole, and Indian influences that make Mauritian food so unique. After the class, sit down together to enjoy the delicious meal you’ve helped prepare, paired with warm hospitality and engaging conversation about life in Canada.

Whoa! John and his wife Monica are supremely awesome Meal Sharing hosts. They hosted my family and I while traveling from Chicago during Thanksgiving. The food was absolutely incredible. Since John is from Mauritius, it was flavors I have never experienced before. Also, they were super kind, and warm people.
