Meet Lianet Cabrera

Lianet studied computer science and currently works as an analyst in a technical service company for sugar mills. She also studied eyebrow design and works a few days a week on her own business as an eyebrow artist. Lianet is very passionate about cooking, specially Cuban food. She learned to cook from a young age, as her mother worked and she had to cook for her younger sister and herself. During her university years she dedicated more time to cooking and was able to learn more from her mother in law, who is a great cook. Lianet learned traditional Cuban dishes and family recipes from her mother-in-law!

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

Cooking experience: (1-4 guests) Lianet lives with her daughter in a spacious apartment in Guiteras. She is excited to share with travelers tips and tricks to cook a traditional Cuban meal using her mother-in-law´s recipes. In this Havana home cooking class, discover Cuban cuisine and culinary traditions. During your cooking class in Havana learn to cook traditional Cuban dishes using fresh, local ingredients. In your hands-on Havana cooking class you might make yuca con mojo (a traditional Cuban side dish made by marinating yuca root in garlic, lime, and olive oil) or taro fritters and congri (Cuban-style black beans & rice) or roasted pork in a casserole. Lianet will take you through the step by step process of making each each, while sharing tips, stories and Cuban culinary traditions. After cooking, sit down to share the dishes you helped prepare which will be served with a juice of tropical fruits, dulce de fruta bomba (candied fruit) and a glass of local wine.

Notes: Lianet can accommodate a lactose free, gluten free, vegetarian and vegan diet on request, if informed in advance. We recommend booking a taxi to Lianet's house in Guiteras and back in advance, as the location is far from the center of town and is not a touristy area.

PERSONALLY VETTED REVIEW
A Traveling Spoon ambassador visited this host. Here is their personal review.

Lianet was super welcoming and kind and quickly made you feel at home. Her house was clean and on a upper floor of a large apartment building with a nice cool breeze. She first started out giving a tutorial of how to make the appetizers and showed us the prep to all the dishes. She was very open to talking about her life and what it means to be Cuban which gave a very authentic experience. The meal was good- the asado pork had a an amazing mix of citrus and garlic and through the cooking she taught us many tips for cooking Cuban food such (for example the sweetened condensed milk can is the measuring cup) and don’t peel the root vegetables until right before using because they will loose their color. This experience was a great mix of culture, delicious food, and hands-on practice.
