Meet Kerryann

John and Kerryann have a deep love of the sea and fishing that shines through as soon as you meet them. John was a lifelong seaweed grazer and started paying more attention to it 15 years ago when he realized what a super food seaweed is and its vast health benefits. Kerryann was always a forager – she grew up foraging for razor clams, mussels and cockles and recently became more interested in seaweed. The couple developed the world’s first knife handle made from seaweed and also produce a line of dog chews created from seaweed that kills the bacteria in their tummy that creates stinky breath. They have also created a seaweed tide clock. John and Kerryann are delighted to share the wonders of the sea with travelers!

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

In-home meal: (1-8 guests) Meet your hosts Kerryann and John at the private dining room of their friend’s restaurant. Sip on a refreshing drink such as masala chai, kombucha or kefir as your host shares stories about foraging. Join your hosts at the dining table to enjoy an 8-course seaweed tasting menu. Your globally influenced gourmet menu will highlight the use of seaweed in each of the dishes. Your 8-course tasting menu may include dishes such as marinated sea spaghetti, onigiri stuffed with kelp relish, spiced beef cured with kelp powder and juniper berries, Local free range pork, Ukranian cured with fennel Kelp, local line-caught cold smoked mackerel, wild garlic and sea lettuce pesto, dilisk crisps in lemon juice and labneh cheese. Your meal will conclude with a dessert of sea brittle, date balls or carrageen pannacotta.

Please note that unlike a typical Traveling Spoon experience, this eight-course meal experience is offered in a private dining room of a restaurant, not a home. BYOB.

Market visit: (1-8 guests) Meet your hosts at the restaurant, and sip on masala chai before watching an interesting and entertaining slide show that introduces you to the history of seaweed use from the earliest settlers 10,000 years ago through the ancient monks and their Viking attackers. Discover the vast health benefits of seaweed and its importance in our lives in ways we may not realize – from its use in toothpaste to ice-cream. You will also get to browse unique seaweed products from around the world so you know what you can order online when back at home. After this introduction to seaweed which lasts about an hour, you will drive to the shore for your foraging tour. Explore, identify and sustainably harvest and taste seaweed, raw from the rocks. Your foraging tour will last about an hour after which you will return to the restaurant to indulge in an 8-course seaweed tasting menu with John and Kerryann.

Please note that this is a foraging tour, not a market tour even though it is categorized as such.

Notes: The exact start time of your experience on any particular day may vary depending on the tide. Your hosts will re-confirm the start time when you make a booking.

Please note this is an adventurous experience. It is recommended that you wear water-proof and slip-proof footwear like gum boots and dress for the weather of the day. Bear in mind that it will be cooler on the shore than on land.
