Meet Andrew

Andrew is a writer and educator passionate about bringing history to life through cooking. His food writing has appeared in Gastro Obscura and Eaten magazine, and he has produced videos on food history for social media under the name "Pass the Flamingo" (because the Romans ate flamingos....not served in this class!) With several years of experience teaching about food history and recreating recipes from historical sources, Andrew invites guests to taste the past through hands-on classes that blend storytelling, archaeology, and flavor.

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

In-home meal: (1-6 guests) Ever wondered what the Ancient Romans ate? To a modern diner, Roman cuisine feels both familiar and surprising, and in many ways, not so different from modern food as you might expect. Enjoy a Roman feast prepared by Andrew, a food writer and educator with a passion for the ancient world, and learn about the flavors of a bygone era. While surviving Ancient Roman cookbooks focus on the elaborate, fancy dishes of the elite, we'll sample the fare of the everyday Roman; somewhat simpler, but no less delicious.

Cooking experience: (1-6 guests) Looking for a unique cooking class in Boston? Step back in time and discover the flavors of Ancient Rome in this immersive, hands-on cooking class in the Boston suburb of Quincy. Begin with a traditional Roman drink or snack as you get to know your host Andrew, a food writer and educator. Explore ancient spices and herbs, learn their fascinating origins, and cook 2–3 authentic Roman dishes using ingredients and techniques from the past. Then sit down to enjoy the meal you prepared together, paired with wine (optional add-on), as you experience how food connects us across centuries.

Notes: Andrew has guinea pigs for pets but they will be moved to another room before your experience.

PERSONALLY VETTED REVIEW
A Traveling Spoon ambassador visited this host. Here is their personal review.

On a snowy December afternoon, we enjoyed a fascinating Roman inspired light lunch with Andrew and his partner. Andrew’s background in classics brought ancient cuisine to life, with dishes inspired by Roman era texts like Apicius. The moretum, a garlicky herb and cheese spread, was bold and flavorful, while the roasted leeks wrapped in cabbage were a standout, comforting and subtly sweet. Savillum and dates with walnuts and honey provided a simple yet satisfying finish, alongside a tangy posca drink. Beyond the delicious food, the history and conversation made the experience truly special. Andrew and his partner were warm, engaging hosts, and the meal felt thoughtful, educational, and wonderfully welcoming.
