Meet Angelina

Although entirely self-taught, Angelina's interest in cooking was inspired as a teenager when she watched her grandmothers and mother cook in their Greek kitchen. She was brought up with a variety of food cooked fresh every day and because she loves meeting people, she started to entertain guests. Angelina has worked as a journalist, has published a magazine and taught media in the past. She has traveled around the world and it was during her time living in South Korea in the 90s that she started offering Greek cooking classes. An active food blogger and member of the Slow Food movement, Angelina is passionate about sharing forgotten Greek recipes with travelers.

What to expect

In-home meal: (1-6 guests) Enjoy a traditional Greek meal at Angelina's dining table, or outdoors when the weather is good. You will start with mezze (Greek appetizers) like taramosalata, saganaki (a soft, fried cheese), tzatziki (yoghurt dip), spanakopita (phyllo pastries), gigantes plaki (giant beans in a tomato sauce) followed by a Greek salad, a main dish such as a whole fish, lamb and potatoes, garides saganaki (prawns in fresh tomato sauce with feta cheese), or revithada (a chickpea dish from the island of Sifnos, slow-cooked in a clay pot) or the traditional moussaka perfectly cooked. For dessert, try Angelina's homemade karidopitta (sticky walnut cake) with ice cream or perhaps semolina halva with spices and homemade citrus jelly.

When they are available, Angelina's husband and daughter will join you for your meal.

Cooking experience: (1-6 guests) Join Angelina in the modern kitchen of her beautiful home to learn to made traditional Greek dishes. Angelina likes to use seasonal produce whenever possible. During your hands-on cooking class you can expect to learn how to make 2-3 traditional Greek mezze dishes, like spanakopita or taramosalata. Your meal will also include additional dishes that Angelina will have prepared in advance. You can expect to cook for about an hour before you sit down to share the meal you helped to prepare.

Market visit: (2-4 guests) Angelina's market visits are available on Tuesdays and Fridays. Meet Angelina at home before she takes you head out to the neighborhood market. On Tuesdays, walk with Angelina to visit an organic farmer's market which operates from 2-4:30pm. After the visit you'll return home to cook dinner together.

On Fridays you'll meet at 10am and then drive together to the nearby vegetable market to explore regional Greek produce like grapes, wild greens and tomatoes. You'll spend about 30-45 minutes in the market before going home to cook lunch.

Notes: Angelina has limited availability during the summer as she is often in Mykonos.

During the warmer months (June - October) your meals might start a bit later to avoid the heat of the day.

Traveler reviews

The minute I walked into Angelina's flat I felt I was at a friend's place, over for lunch. A friend I hadn't seen for a long time. We conversed pretty much about everything, dreams and plans, food and travels. It felt right. Along with a glass of wine (served at just the right temperature), that's what great food does, it sets free your tongue! - Kallia, Traveling Spoon Ambassador

Angelina Kalogeropoulou was a Traveling Spoon hostess extraordinaire. We enjoyed meeting her family and her scrumptious cooking, even the Greek wine was excellent. It was so fun to meet Angelina and her daughters. The Moussaka was the best I've ever had, and I love Greek food. - Theresa

Angelina was phenomenal! We enjoyed her company tremendously and it was so nice to learn how to make authentic traditional Greek lunch dishes. I will definitely visit Angelina again during all my trips to Athens! I hope to stay in touch! Her home is absolutely beautiful especially the fresh lemon trees. Angelina even arranged a cab for pick up. The food was amazing and she went above and beyond answering all of our questions. - Erica

Dinner with Angelina and her husband in Athens was our third Traveling Spoon experience, and each one has been so special and each seems more interesting than the previous. Angelina lives in a beautiful home in a beautiful part of Athens. It was a short, very easy taxi ride from our hotel which was on Syntagma Square. There were four of us in our party, and as soon as we arrived we felt like we had been invited to old friends for a meal. Everything was naturally Greek, and many had ingredients we cannot get in US nor in fact had heard of before. The whole time while she was cooking her delightful, well travelled husband served us wonderful Greek wine. Angelina is quite well known in Greece, blogs on Greek food, is often on television talking about food, and cooks for many events both in Athens and abroad. Dinner with Angelina was one of the highlights and best memories of our trip to Greece. Thank you Traveling Spoon. - Sandy
