Meet Juan and Marina

Juan initially took up cooking as a hobby back in his native country of Colombia; he grew up in Bogota and later moved to Buenos Aires to train to become a professional chef. He graduated from IAG (Instituto Argentino de Gastronomía) and then ran his own Argentinean restaurant and catering business along with his wife, Marina. Marina is Argentinean with Russian and Swiss roots and is the perfect partner for Juan, as she enjoys hosting and Juan loves cooking! Juan and Marina specialize in Argentinean, Caribbean and South American cuisine. Juan especially enjoys cooking Argentinean asado, though he has experience cooking of all types of Latin American cuisines, particularly Colombian pastries.

What to expect

Please note menu might vary. If there are particular dishes you are interested in trying, please include your request in the booking form.

In-home meal: (1-6 guests) Juan and Marina live in Martinez, a suburb of Buenos Aires. Their home is in a gated property, situated on a classic residential leafy street dotted with pretty houses. The interior is designed in a cozy cottage style and includes a side patio and yard and outside dining area with Juan's BBQ and cooking spot.

Enter Juan and Marina's home and enjoy a few tastes to start your experience like homemade arepas with guacamole, chorizo sausage wrapped in pastry with relish and chimichurri, and grilled provolone cheese served with rocket. This will be followed by a traditional Argentinian asado, which is an assortment of grilled meats such as blood sausage (morcilla), pork flank and bife de chorizo (beef sirloin), which will served with salad, char-grilled peppers and onions, and guacamole. Your meal will end with a sweet dessert of dulce de leche pancakes.

Cooking experience: (1-6 guests) Juan offers a hands-on Buenos Aires cooking class as well as barbecue (asado) demonstration. First join Juan at the barbecue where you will learn about the different cuts of meat, the various methods of cooking and eating each cut, and then begin slow-cooking your meal. After your barbecue demonstration, join Juan in his kitchen to learn to make the dough for your main entree, as well as some homemade extra-crunchy fugazetta pizzettas. After your demonstration and cooking lesson enjoy your authentic asado meal together in Juan and Marina's home.

Notes: Juan and Marina can offer vegetarian and gluten free meals on request.

PERSONALLY VETTED REVIEW
A Traveling Spoon ambassador visited this host. Here is their personal review.

With Juan and Marina's Argentinean Asado, you can expect an authentic South American experience. Juan has great culinary experience, both in Argentina and Colombia and this really shines through his cooking. They are both foodies with a passion for combining flavors; you will be able to lend a hand in kneading dough for homemade Choripan, observe and learn how to slow cook tender meats on a BBQ as well as cook your own Arepas. You will also try a homemade desert with the delicious Dulche De Leche. Throughout this experience you will gain valuable knowledge of Argentinean cooking and the current Buenos Aires buzzing food scene. Juan and Marina are very friendly and welcoming and enjoy hosting like minded travelers. They are a wealth of knowledge for travel, food and culture. My favorite food experience so far in Argentina!

We recently enjoyed a scrumptious meal and a wonderful evening with Juan and Marina. They reached out before the evening to ensure we were able to find their home. From the moment we arrived at their home they made us feel like special guests and new best friends at the same time. They greeted us with homemade pizza and endless delicious wine. Juan, who is a chef by training, showed us how to prepare empanadas and other appetizers from scratch. We had so much fun getting our hands dirty and kneading the dough. We were taught how to season beef properly and slow cook it on the outside wood and coal barbeque. We sat down to a delicious meal and felt very comfortable in their home. The food was delicious, probably the best beef and pork we have ever eaten and cooked to perfection. It was a highlight of our trip to Argentina and we did not want the evening to end. They made some excellent suggestions for other restaurants and things to do while in town. We very highly recommend this unique experience and we will definitely visit again when we return to Buenos Aires.

Our cooking class with Juan and Marina was one of the highlights of our time in Buenos Aires. They reached out ahead of time, to connect and again as we got closer, to be sure we knew how to find their home. They were very accommodating of our time constraints and even made some adjustments for us and had everything laid out and organized. We were welcomed with big hugs and delicious food. We enjoyed making the empanada dough and then filling it with something delicious they had prepared ahead of time. The empanadas were fried but not at all greasy. We loved preparing and tasting the different sauces and learning about how to cook the asado. Seriously, some of the best meat ever. Sure, the food was AMAZING but what made the experience were the people. Juan and Marina are so friendly and interesting and we had such easy conversation with them. We left feeling like we had new friends in Buenos Aires. Thank you!

Cooking and dining with Juan and Marina. Asado cooking with Juan and Marina was a once in a lifetime experience. They were welcoming into their home and provided us with a hands on experience as we wanted. Because of their help I look forward to hosting a dinner party with friends to prepare Panchoripan dough and and other appetizers we learned.

Had a great hands on experience. Excellent meal and training on how to do it. We made Empanadas from scratch, learned what meats to use and how to best prepare them and understood the why’s.

My friend and I booked the Argentinean Asado and Cooking lesson with Juan & Marina and could not have been happier with our experience! Juan & Marina had a beautiful home and were exceptional hosts who made us feel like we had been life long friends. We learned how to cook traditional Asado as well as making authentic chimichurri and a few other delicious items. The steak we had was hands down the most delicious steak we had our ENTIRE time in Argentina. With Juan & Marina's impeccable hospitality, delicious food and beautiful home I would not hesitate to book this experience again with them. It feels as if I've made lifelong friends.

After two weeks of exploring Argentina, we were lucky enough to be welcomed into Juan and Marina's beautiful home. It was as if we had known them for years, It was the first time in Argentina we were able to dig deeper into the cuisine than just indulging. As Juan has an extensive background in gastronomy and Marina in hospitality, and they both have a strong understanding of the English language (as well as a few other languages), they explained the importance of each step in the process and were able to give hints of how to take the dish to the "next level". Eating local cuisine is always the recommended way to experience the local culture (we did a lot), but Juan's empanadas were the best empanadas we had in Argentina. I am so happy we were able to enjoy this lovely night and recommend Juan and Marina to anyone that is in Buenos Aires!

A memorable evening! Our Traveling Spoon experience in Buenos Aires with Juan and Marina was one of the highlights of our trip. They are both excellent hosts and instructors. The food was so delicious, that I even want to add some of their recipes to our Thanksgiving Dinner! Thank you for making our trip that much more memorable!

Juan and Marina were very welcoming and so interesting. Their home was lovely and was well worth the ride out to San Isdero. Bring your appetite as they had a traditional pizza and sausage appetizers to start and three different grilled meats with all the sides which were delicious. Dessert was homemade flan with Dulce de leche which melted in your mouth. .I highly recommend spending an evening with them. If possible, your first evening in town as they gave us wonderful suggestions of restaurants and activities for our stay.

Amazing experience. Without a doubt, this was the best night that we spent in Buenos Aires. These two are the most warm, gorgeous couple to spend an evening with. Juan and Marina are so kind and welcoming - we felt instantly at home as soon as we walked into their lovely house and were offered a drink. We spent a whole evening with them learning about traditional Argentinian cooking (especially the magic of the BBQ). One of us was gluten-free and both of them had gone above and beyond to accommodate that. Excellent wine, fantastic food and even better company! Would come back and visit them in a heartbeat - thanks both x

Whenever I travel to a new place I love to take a cooking class! This is a sure fire way to experience the culture, learn more about the food and history of the region, have fun, improve my cooking skills and typically enjoy the best meal of the trip! So for our recent trip to Buenos Aires, we signed up for “Enjoy an Argentinean Asado and Cooking Lesson with Locals in Buenos Aires”, and it delivered on all criteria! The cooking class is at Juan and Marina’s warm and welcoming home; an inexpensive taxi ride from the Palermo district. Juan and Marina made us right at home and had a delicious menu for us to prepare and feast on together. Preparing the meal while enjoying Argentinian wines and their good company was only exceeded by sitting down to eat the results and they were scrumptious! Empanadas, fugazzetta pizza, parillo and more. It is easy to recommend this terrific experience.

Juan & Marina exceeded any expectation we could have ever imagined. From the moment we met them, we were instant friends. They welcomed us into their beautiful home and made us feel as though we were old friends. They were so informative in teaching us new cuts of meat, types of wood, techniques and their cultural past-time. We talked, we laughed, we ate for hours and learned how the traditional Asado was prepared and presented. The food and wine were amazing. Every course was just as good as the one before. The flavors were incredible. Juan's Colombian twist added a new dimension to the Asado as well as some of their Colombian appetizers. Juan & Marina showed us how to make panchoripan which we had never had before. Juan taught us the proper way to start the parrilla with woods we are now dreaming of. We were so inspired that we have taken a new approach to the way we BBQ and the Argentine cuisine. We hope to build an Argentine parrilla in our backyard and entertain our friends with an Asado experience like the one we experienced in their home. Thank you so very much Juan and Marina for not only an unforgettable evening but for the recipes and the ongoing culinary advice. We hope to meet you again someday! Terry & Jaxon

Hosts typically respond to booking inquiries within 72 hours. If for some reason you have not heard from your host or if you have any questions you can always contact us at reservations@travelingspoon.com.

Your safety and security are our top priority. To ensure this, Traveling Spoon personally vets 100% of all hosts, including an in-person host visit, to ensure each host and experience meets our strict quality requirements.

Some hosts offer transportation as an optional add-on for travelers. Typically this is round trip transportation with pick up and drop off at your hotel. Pricing is quoted per car. Specific instructions for transportation will be provided in your confirmation details when your booking is confirmed.

Many of our hosts accommodate solo travelers. You can see if a host accepts solo travelers by looking at the traveler range found next to the experience descriptions on the host profile (indicated by the numbers in parentheses next to "In-home meal", "Cooking experience" and "Market visit").

Most of our Traveling Spoon experiences are incredibly family friendly and can accommodate infants and children. If a host is unable to accommodate children that will be noted in the “Notes” section of their profile. Our child pricing policy is children aged 5-11 are 50% off, and infants aged 0-4 are free.
