Meet Florencia

Florencia, who grew up in the area of La Plata about 40-minutes south of Buenos Aires, started cooking when she was very young. The child of a large family of six children, cooking was a part of growing up and she remembers cooking in her kitchen at the age of four. Her grandmother in particular absolutely loved cooking, so every weekend when she joined her grandmother for family meals she would help her in the kitchen. Florencia liked cooking so much that a few years ago she decided she wanted to do it more professionally and began studying to be a pastry chef. She says, “It was a struggle to leave aside my other studies, but my grandma was a great inspiration. I just love food. When you cook you put so much of yourself, and so much love, into the food. It is such a beautiful bonding experience to be able to give to someone.” After finishing her pastry and advanced pastry degrees, Florencia recently left her job at the embassy to follow her passion for food and now creates pastries and cakes full-time for weddings and other events.

Florencia lives with her husband Patricio, who grew up not only in Buenos Aires but in the same building where they live now! Patricio's parents live in the same building. Florencia says Patricio loves eating and loves food, and that is why he married her!

In-home meal: (1-4 guests) Join Florencia for a traditional Argentinian meal in her apartment in Barracas, a traditional, centrally-located neighborhood in Buenos Aires. Florencia’s home is on the main avenue of Barracas in a large apartment on the building’s eighth floor. Start your experience with an appetizer of small homemade empanadas, which might be filled with mozzarella with caramelized onions or spinach and ricotta, or a traditional picada, a platter of assorted meats and cheeses. Argentinian cuisine often focuses around the country’s high-quality meat and your main menu will feature some of the region’s delicious meat offerings (although Florencia is also happy to cook vegetarian if you like). You might enjoy dishes like beef milanesa (meat finely cut and breaded) topped with cheese and homemade tomato sauce, Florencia’s husband’s favorite dish, or tender succulent roast beef served with a side of roasted vegetables and a salad. As Florencia says, Argentinian meats are the best, so the preparation is often incredibly simple. To end, enjoy a homemade dessert that Florencia, a trained pastry chef, will have prepared in advance. Your dessert might be a dulce de leche trifle, dark chocolate mousse, or Queen’s tart, a traditional buttery quince tarte from the north of Argentina.

Begin your experience with a small picada (a traditional Argentinian meat and cheese platter) and welcome drink. Then you will begin making your empanadas, starting with making the dough and preparing one filling from scratch. Your filling might be traditional ground beef with spices and onions, caprese (tomato, basil and mozzarella), or humita (a northern Argentinian filling with corn and a béchamel-like sauce). While the empanadas are cooking, begin to make your pastry dish. You will learn to make two or more traditional Argentinian pastries such alfajores or membricho tart. Then sit down to enjoy your sweet and savory creations together! (4-5 hours total experience)

She welcomed us into her home and offered us such great hands on instruction for making empanadas(we made traditional beef and hard boiled egg), marroc and alfajores. The experience with Flor was fantastic. She exceeded all of my expectations with fantastic food, being a very welcoming host and her expertise in cooking/pastry making. She taught us how to make empanadas, alfajores, Argentinian cake and marroc (an Argentinian chocolate snack). My favorite part of the experience was her insistence that we do the cooking so we can learn and be able to reproduce what we cooked back home. She also provided print outs of recipes for everything we cooked, which was awesome! I definitely will make these dishes again when I return home. All in all I highly recommend Flor if you want an authentic Buenos Aires culinary experience. Note that this is a very hands-on experience and we spent about 4-5 hrs with Flor, so be prepared for an authentic, hands-on experience!

    You can cancel your experience 48 hours or more before your experience date and receive a full refund. To request a cancellation once you have made a booking simply log in and click the "Request Cancellation" link from the bottom of your booking. Your refund will be processed immediately (note it can take up to 10 business days for this refund to post to your credit card statement). Please note that for cancellations within 48 hours of your experience we unfortunately cannot offer a refund; this is because our hosts typically purchase food and begin their preparations up to 48 hours before the experience.

    Most of our hosts are able to accommodate dietary restrictions and allergies, including vegetarian and gluten free options. For vegetarian travelers, we have an icon on each host profile to indicate whether that host can also offer a fully vegetarian menu. There is a section in the booking form to note any allergies or dietary restrictions which will be sent directly to your host.

    If you have a question about an experience, create a reservation and include your note in the field "Write a note to your host". Once you request a booking you can continue to message your host directly to ask any specific questions. You can always cancel your booking and receive a full refund as long as you cancel 48 hours in advance.

    Your card will not be charged until your host accepts your booking. Typically hosts respond to bookings within 72 hours. In the event your host is unavailable on your selected date and your host rejects your booking your credit card will not be charged.

    Your host's detailed contact information, including their phone number, address, and direction notes, will all be provided immediately upon successful confirmation of your experience (after your hosts accepts your booking and your credit card is successfully processed). This information will be emailed to you to the email address you used to sign up, and will also be visible on your Traveling Spoon profile.

    All prices are noted per person prices unless otherwise specified. Transportation is typically charged on a per car basis, but otherwise all prices are per person. Children aged 5-11 are 50% off, and infants aged 0-4 are free.

    Some hosts offer alcohol as an optional add-on for travelers who are of legal drinking age. Pricing for alcohol is visible on the host profile page and includes one to two glasses of wine, beer or local alcohol.

    Some hosts offer transportation as an optional add-on for travelers. Typically this is round trip transportation with pick up and drop off at your hotel. Pricing is quoted per car. Specific instructions for transportation will be provided in your confirmation details when your booking is confirmed.

    Many of our hosts accommodate solo travelers. You can see if a host accepts solo travelers by looking at the traveler range found next to the experience descriptions on the host profile (indicated by the numbers in parentheses next to "In-home meal", "Cooking experience" and "Market visit").
